if you have a linksys WRT54G you can increase the signal power. But that doesn't help if your laptop/wireless card doesn't have good sensitivity or transmit power.

Replace the antenna is an option.

A repeater is another option, but will hurt throughput in most cases.

You best bet (easiest, cheapest) in a townhouse is to move the access point itself. You can hack up the cables if you are so inclined to do power over ethernet and then you have a lot of flexibility of where you can put the unit. Walls and anyhting solid will kill the signal. So for instance is the signal needs to go across the townhouse and through a staircase your signal will suck. Try to pick a good open central location and see if that helps.

Why did you come to that conclusion? It wasn't your original question and probably the most expensive option. Moving the target pc is an option too. If you have a desktop with a wireless card that just pokes out of the back of the case, you might be amazed if you turn the pc around. For that case a USB wireless adapter or new antenna will be fine.

Your cash though. If you are set on doing the repeater and buying more equipment, I would personally think about getting cat 5 upstairs and running it independently. There are many ways to get a wire upstairs depending on what you want to do.

only reason i want the repeater is to pick up wireless signals better, i never said my wireless signal, i just said wireless signals in general

i have a beam antenna from these guys, i can shoot my signal about 1.3 miles in one direction with another anteanna on the other end (i have one beam and one omni) but just using the laptop i can get like 800ft with the omni (also from buffalotech)

i've been looking into this myself and i've noticed that some devices that would work for this say they only work with wireless routers of the same brand, and in come cases, only a complimentary router.

does anyone know a good access point that would work with ANY wireless router?
