So P.Riv's dad is back in town cause he didn't like San Diego.
Let me guess, you were used to being treated like a celebrity and the people in San Diego didn't give a fuck that you were the daddy of a backup Quarterback.
You cant just walk into SO.Cal and expect to run the town.
Also, it looks like Philip is gonna be back on the bench for year 3.
No one is gonna wanna trade for Brees now, and I highly doubt San Diego wants to risk going into the season without an insurance policy.
Now Philip, you money grubbing bastard. Do us all a favor and shut the fuck up and eat this bench.

By the way.
If Philp acts like a man this season and acts like a good teammate then I will be willing to give him another chance.
Until he stops being a fucking baby though he doesn't deserve any more support than you give Koren Robinson.
I dont understand why Terrell Owens is a nigger but Philip Rivers is a Golden Boy, when what Rivers did was more out of line.
Philip fooled you people into thinking he was some great guy that wasn't like the rest of them... but when it came down to it he showed his true colors. 1/1/2006 2:41:40 PM |

well they both held out for money.
The difference being, T.Owens had a legitimate beef while Rivers was being a moron.
One of them is one of the best players in the league.... and the other one comes in to kneel the ball in blowouts.
So when you think about it, it seems strange that Rivers makes $6.5 million and T.O makes $3.5 million

Sounds plenty fair to me.

incorrect.
The offer was for 6 years 40.5 million with a large signing bonus (approx 12 million i think).
Rivers refused, citing that Eli Manning had signed for ~46 million or so and that he believed he should be paid as if he were ALSO the #1 pick in the draft.
THe Chargers laughed at this ridiculous notion and countered with the offer that if he made several pro bowls + Super bowl appearances in his first five years, then incentives would kick in to make his deal bigger than Mannings.
Obviously, if Philip was making pro bowls in his first few seasons then the Chargers would have give him a huge contract extension anyway (a la Carson Palmer and his $120 million deal).
Basically, the Chargers said.

I'm not trolling, this is a new update.
Everyone figured that Brees (or possibly Rivers) would be traded at the end of the year.
With Brees injury and pending surgery, it is much less likely that either will be traded.
It's looking like Rivers & Bench in '06!!!! 1/1/2006 3:15:18 PM |

According to Sexson, the original contract had one bonus of $5 million if he won three Super Bowls and made it to three Pro Bowls. Another $7.5 million if he added a fourth, and then another $10 million if he added a fifth. All this within the six year contract. 1/1/2006 3:19:21 PM |

SI's Peter King said of the negotiations, at the time:
"I think it is unbelieveable that the Chargers are at war with their first-round quarterback, Philip Rivers. Not that I know much about the business, but the Chargers are using one of the dumbest ploys they teach you NEVER to use in Negotiations 101. Never break off talks and say, "The offer will go down every day from here on out.'' Silly, I-dare-you-to-knock-this-block-off-my-shoulder crappola. Rivers won't be signing for a dime less than was on the table the day San Diego made that pronouncement." 1/1/2006 3:22:38 PM |

A great idea the Chargers had.
Philip was under the impression he was "negotiating" with the Chargers and the Chargers were saying

The original reason for River's hold out was related to the contract they were offering. His contract would have been worth $40M. But there were some crazy things like making the playoffs 5 of the first 6 years, and starting some crazy number of games. There was also some clause that related to how much he got paid if he was injured or something...... 1/1/2006 5:00:51 PM |

all have had to hold out of camp.
to further compare river's situation to TO's laughable. there is a big difference in holding out for your initial contract and holding out a year after signing an extension.

IS NOT TRUE
It has been discussed a million times and we all know it isnt true.
Here is the point of the fucking thread.
It looks as though due to Brees injury, that they both have a strong possibility of remaining in San Diego next year.
How the fuck is that not original?

He signed the contract after turning it down multiple times.
This is why he missed training camp and lost his chances to start for the Chargers.
Brees won the job fair & square. Be a man and suck it up.

The average signing date for the Charger's first round picks over the last 5 years was the exact day Rivers signed. Seems to me that has more to do with the Chargers than Rivers. But nice job with your pointless thread. 1/1/2006 6:47:16 PM |
rallydurham Suspended 11317 Posts user info edit post |
^^ no, most people do not agree with that.
He turned down 38 million... then 39 million.
He was demanding ~45 million
The Chargers put down an offer for 40.5 million and said thats our final offer and its going down every day after today.... someone even posted that quote above.
Rivers balked, left San Diego and came back to Raleigh to work out.....
Jesus christ it was only two years ago.
You guys will stop at nothing to make him look like a Golden Boy.
I dont have a SERIOUS problem with what he did.... although he was being illogical about the whole "i deserve to make as much as Eli" thing.... everyone can agree that was just plain illogical, im sure.
The serious problem I have is that you don't give Terrell Owens, Javon Walker, etc the same benefit of the doubt that you give Philip Rivers.
That's wrong.
And to hear Philip bitch about playing time after he made it abundantly clear that money was his #1 priority... that irks me.
