The offer was for 6 years 40.5 million with a large signing bonus (approx 12 million i think).


Rivers refused, citing that Eli Manning had signed for ~46 million or so and that he believed he should be paid as if he were ALSO the #1 pick in the draft.

THe Chargers laughed at this ridiculous notion and countered with the offer that if he made several pro bowls + Super bowl appearances in his first five years, then incentives would kick in to make his deal bigger than Mannings.

Obviously, if Philip was making pro bowls in his first few seasons then the Chargers would have give him a huge contract extension anyway (a la Carson Palmer and his $120 million deal).

Basically, the Chargers said.

The original reason for River's hold out was related to the contract they were offering. His contract would have been worth $40M. But there were some crazy things like making the playoffs 5 of the first 6 years, and starting some crazy number of games. There was also some clause that related to how much he got paid if he was injured or something......
