That's like saying it was fire and gravity (or the act of falling...) that killed the 9/11 victims. 1/5/2006 2:24:07 AM |

YEAH, HOW BOUT WE FIND A NEW SOURCE OF ENERGY INSTEAD OF THE THING WE'VE BEEN USING FOR LIKE 200 YEARS 1/5/2006 8:00:34 AM |

We are. Plasma research, Magnetic research, hydrogen fuels, more efficient solar cells, thermal pocket research, new fission techniques, etc etc etc.
The thing is... the more complex and energy source is to create the harder it is to maintain. Coal is simple. Mine it, burn it, it produces heat. Heat's generally easy to obtain energy from.
Compare that to a nuclear facility.
Add in the factor that we don't want bad byproducts, and costwise it cannot go up... in fact we'd like it to go down... your choices are limited.
Coal and Oil are cheap to produce and the process has been refined to almost an art. However it's a limited resource which we are trying to replace. 1/5/2006 9:12:09 AM |

Yes, if only they extorted their employer by establishing a labor monopoly, then all would be well.1/9/2006 2:34:10 PM |

There is no direct correlation between whether or not a mine's workforce is unionized and the safety record of the mine. My personal opinion is that the presence of unions in general has elevated the safety of all mines across the board, not improve one particular mine's safety over another.
This is simply a case of crappy management in a dangerous field, and the company deserves every fine and lawsuit leveled against it for this tragedy.1/9/2006 3:37:47 PM |

now we'll just have to wait for those fines and lawsuits to come to fruition and compare that to the costs of the saftey precautions that wern't instituted to see if their previous inaction made good business sense. 1/9/2006 5:02:48 PM |

Whatever costs were avoided by operating the mile unsafely, the mine has now collapsed, the equipment is smashed, and would take millions to put back in working order if it is even possible. Whatever the company was, it is probably ruined at this point. No bank is going to give them a loan, no workers are going to work for them, no investor will buy their stock, etc. etc. 1/9/2006 10:30:19 PM |
