I purchased a Dell computer the other day and now at startup I get a message saying that I need to insert the Sonic Update Manager CD. This CD did not come with my computer and i have no idea how to fix the problem. I tried calling Dell and they were totally unhelpful, as always. Has anybody encountered this problem before and know how to fix it? I can't use Sonic DVD burner without this problem being resolved. Thanks.

I use Sonic occasionally, but with Windows, you don't need anything else. I use WMP to burn audio CDs and dvdburn from Windows Resource Kit Tools to burn ISOs.

Encountered the problem on the g/f's computer and uninstalled it. She was in a similar situation. If Dell doesn't provide CDs with the system, you are SOL. Any chance its an Inspiron 2200?

Good call. Do some hunting on Google if you haven't already.

^^
Dell computer's come preloaded with a bunch of unnecessary crap. Usually its best to format and start from scratch. However, if you don't have the CDs, uninstalling everything is the best route to go. And yes, I completely uninstalled Sonic and anything Sonic-related. The one time I needed to use the program at work it completely flopped. Would recommend Nero if you can your hands on it. If not, call Dell technical support again and stay on the phone until they resolve your problem. Have your Service Tag # (on the bottom of the laptop) ready so they can check whether or not your laptop was supposed to come with CDs or not.

hmm yeah i did search google and i found that other people have similar problems but i couldnt find a specific solution. My computer didn't come with the CDs and when I called Dell they said that my 3 year limited warranty only covered hardware not software, and to get help with a software problem they would have to charge me $99 which is bs. They wouldn't budge after arguing for over an hour with the supervisor so i'm trying to solve the problem on my own. If I don't have the installation CDs, how would I handle this solution? Thanks for all your help.
