Just curious if anyone listened to the first show today? I don't have satellite radio so I didn't, but just wanted to know if it met expectations.

i listened to a good portion of it - it was pretty good - the side banter was funnier than the actual show

I dont have either, but from what I can tell, the ACC is the only thing XM has that I would want. Exclusive contracts do nothing but hurt consumers and drive prices up.

I heard some recaps from Stern's show. Apparently it bombed pretty hard for its first day. Loved how he straight up lied and copied Opie & Anthony. They did that skit about Pat's sex calls fucking 8 months ago when it originally came out and was still news, yet he claimed yesterday was the first time they had been played uncensored. Yea, in 2006 maybe.

I guess I've just never been really impressed by him. Stern just seems like a creep. I think its much more entertaining listening to Opie & Anthony in the mornings on XM myself, but thats just my opinion.

Stern's show did not bomb pretty hard, it went over quite well. He didn't lie. He never claimed that no one had ever played the Pat O'brien tapes uncensored, just that it was the first time his show got to play them in their entirety. I've listened to a good bit of Stern and Opie & Anthony and Stern's show is better by miles.

I'm not saying Stern's old stuff isn't good. But he seems very tired and routine now. Of course maybe he'll get a rebirth by being freed of the shit that was holding him down at Infinity with all the regulations. Perhaps that was stifling his creativity, I dunno.

stern gets WAY more press because back in the day (the 80's) he WAS the most dangerous man on radio. But you know what, that was a LONG time ago and things have changed. He is in his 50s and will be going from an audience of 20 million a day to less than 3 Million. That is a HUGE drop off. The hype will die down in a few weeks and it will just be about him doing a radio show. And with no FCC to fight, no limits on content, and not as many people giving a crap what he has to say, he will find it hard to be edgy.

This man has spent the last 2 or 3 years of his show doing nothing but bitching about the FCC and Infinity broadcasting. What's he gonna bitch about now? Sirius? they paid him $500M and he just got an ADDITIONAL $220M in stock options.

Believe what you want, but Sirius fucked up giving him that much money. Sure, it looks good in the short term, but in the long run??

Yea apparently it strapped Sirius for cash to the point that they did not renew their option with Fox News. Big deal I woulda thought, but apparently that station is the 3rd most popular station on both Sirius and XM. While I think getting Stern was a big boost for them, if the amount of cash they dropped on him means they can't compete in other areas, I don't know if it will end up being a good buy in the long run. Not that he hasn't helped them significantly, but almost a billion dollars worth of helping? Hmmm, jury is gonna be out for a while on this one.

"Howard Stern may curse the day he decided to leave terrestrial radio and jump to Sirius – the satellite broadcaster is taking steps to censor the shock jock.

The morning drive-time radio host said he left terrestrial radio because he was fed up with censorship by individual stations and FCC fines for indecency. Now, in what must be a painful irony for Stern, Sirius executives are developing an internal document that will set boundaries for his show.

Stern’s new show is also being broadcast with a time-delay that facilitates censoring, the New York Post reports.

It’s not clear if Stern knew he would be subject to guidelines regarding indecency when he signed on with Sirius, according to the Post.

Sirius’ move to impose boundaries on Stern comes as pressure continues to mount in Congress to regulate programming on cable and satellite radio and TV. "

Wow, apparently this is because they don't have any way to restrict the content for people who don't want to hear all the cursing on Sirius stations. They haven't busted XM because they have channel blocking, so if you don't want to hear that, you simply call in and have the channel(s) removed. But Sirius doesn't have this ability.

Sirius/Stern was also on Barron's magazine cover this week, saying "Don't Bet on Howard" as they think Sirius fucked up by dropping all their eggs in one basket. Meanwhile at CES in Vegas, XM unveiled several new portable units, which are iPod or smaller size, store MP3's, can record off XM radio, and can listen to XM while portable, like the MyFi. They will be released in March, while Sirius still doesn't have anything approaching this, as they can't afford to spend so much on R&D, and simply outsource their units.

Lastly have you heard that Howard said without the commercial breaks, he is forced to come up with so much material that he will only be able to work 4 days a week and about 9 months a year? Man, don't bust your ass too hard for that half a billion dollars.

Sirius already has a portable unit that can record and store mp3s, the S50.

Yes, but it also can't play like Sirius programming. You have to "time-shift" it, ie you have to record it on the base station and then you can carry it with you to listen to. It does not do live Sirius feeds plus record the feed, and allow you to download mp3s on your base station. Its basically just an iPod that can download Sirius programming.

that doesnt surprise me...one thing i didnt like about howard was how long and how often his commercial breaks were. if they started a break when i got in my car in the morning, more then likely it would be commercials all the way to work. (about 15 minutes).

^^O&A have fucking Stern beat to hell now in my opinion. How many other radio guys do you know that can drag the CEO of the company they work for into the studio and live on the air snap him with a fucking mousetrap like 4 times! Ahaha that shit was painfully hilarious this morning.

I love the schedule they are on. I catch them in the morning on the way to work and then they are rebroadcasing the later parts of the show when I head home 5 or 6 pm. I had XM radio for like 2 years and never listened to these guys until I got my Roady 2 at Christmas. Now I can't stop listening to them.
