art monk's career, not so very different from irvin's... even better in some of those big statiscical categories
Receptions: Monk - 940 (5th) NFL all-time rank in parentheses Irvin - 750 (18th)
Rec Yards: Monk - 12721 (9th) Irvin - 11904 (14th)
Yards/Catch: Monk - 13.5 Irvin - 15.9
Touchdowns: Monk - 68 (29th) Irvin - 65 (35th)
1000-yard Seasons: Monk - 5 Irvin - 8 (huge difference)
The difference is, obviously, a little bit longevity, and the fact that Monk played in four more seasons than irvin. Monk's numbers are HOF-worthy, though, and he is clearly one of the top possession receivers of all time. It may have hurt monk's stats in that his receiving corps boasted two great speedburners in Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders. It also didn't help that Monk wasn't terribly fast.
Monk has as many rings as Irvin, though he didn't play in the 1983 Super Bowl.. just the previous playoff games. It does speak volumes of Monk as a receiver to boast such huge numbers over a career that included so many different quarterbacks: Irvin had one his entire ride... and one of the best of his generation.
But the guys at SI are blackballing Monk and he'll likely never get in. fuck it.

Aside from the numbers ^^^ posted.. He was the first reciever to catch 100 passes in a single season. When he retired he was leading in all time receptions.
Oh, and you DON'T compare Monk to Irvin, they played in seperate eras. You compare Monk to other recievers in the years he played. Granted they where both in the league for like 3 years or something.. but that doesnt count.

Great class. Nice to see some love for madden finally. Gotta love 2 Cowboys going in too.
Oh and speaking as a Cowboys fan: Art Monk deserves to be in the hall of fame wayyy before Irvin. The fact that he is not in yet is rather sad in my book. If/when Irvin gets in, he better be in the same class or the one after Monk. 2/4/2006 3:02:21 PM |

monk not being in is a disgrace, if anybody reads the daily czabe, they saw this (kinda long but makes the point if you're interested)
Quote : | "1. When Art Monk retired, he held the 1) Single Season Catch Record 2) The All-Time Career Catch Record 3) The Consecutive Games With a Catch Record. A veritable trifecta of excellence defining marks. No other wideout on this list (or any other list) ever RETIRED while holding all three of those belts.
2. Art Monk did not talk to the media. Hardly ever. And it wasn’t like a Sterling Sharpe vendetta, Monk was just plain media shy. And he won’t talk about the Hall of Fame now. Hell, I’ve tried several times. So a vote against Monk for the HOF, is a defacto admission by media members with the votes that they factor in what you did in front of the “pen and mic club” as part of their process.
3. A supposed “knock” on Monk is that he was merely a “possession receiver.” Yeah, who needs one of those? As a Redskin fan who watched every single one of his 940 catches, I can assure you that there was nothing more satisfying than knowing that on 3rd and 7, if Monk had half a step on his guy, the catch was GOING to be made. Period, amen. The man moved more chains in his career than an Alabama prison work crew, but I guess first downs don’t matter to some.
4. The mark of a true professional, is consistency. Anybody can be flashy for a short period of time. Anybody can have monster years off-set by mediocre ones. But Monk was the model of consistency. And some would have you believe this is a negative, not something to be exalted.
5. Art Monk won two Super Bowls and went to another. He did so with three different quarterbacks, none of whom is going to the Hall of Fame. Where I come from, that’s called being a “winner.”
In short, a vote against Art Monk for the HOF means a vote against…
1. Productivity 2. Longevity 3. Professionalism 4. Consistency 5. Modesty
Well now. Isn’t that a great set of criteria to tell young players today gets you absolutely NO credit from the so-called “media experts” in this day and age.
This year Michael Irvin will likely be forced to wait a year for his HOF induction. The following year, however, he seems like a lock. Boy won’t his induction speech be one for the TiVO ages. I hope they have subtitles in ebonics-to-English. " |

No, it really doesn't. He was a great QB that happened to be black.
Anybody remember the first defensive lineman or offensive tackle that was black to get in? No, because it doesn't matter.
It's so retarded because it's BLACKS that keep reminding the world they're just now stepping up to the plate and enbracing greatness. Him admitting he's the 1st is the same as saying that whites been doin' it LONG before me, and now I'm just catching up.
Racism will never go away so long as blacks keep bringing it up. 2/4/2006 6:59:48 PM |
