that's not even the biggest that jellyfish can get I don't understand why they can't market this as a delicacy in Japan and turn their fishing problems around -- it seems to me that the Japanese consume everything they possibly can from the ocean -- say it's an aphrodisiac, they'll eat it up 1/19/2006 1:18:46 PM |

thats the caption from the pic in the article...is it just me or would it be completely fucking stupid to swim BEHIND a jellyfish, with its millions of stinging cells and all?
granted, the diver is in fact in front of and to the side of the jellyfish1/19/2006 5:18:37 PM |

where's the best place to be around a driver you expect of being drunk?
behind him.
if you are in front of them, they could come at you without having time to react 1/19/2006 5:21:02 PM |

the ocean is full of terrible things
it seems like there's no real reason for a jellyfish that huge to exist, other than to bewilder and terrify humans 1/19/2006 10:14:59 PM |

i would shit my pants too if i hadn't read this article...
but since now we know they are not dangerous to humans, i wouldn't freak out.
either way, i would rather encounter one of those than a giant squid, which can be anywhere from 2 to 5 times as large.

I mean, it said they can sting people..... I bet you'd still feel pretty odd swimming around next to a 440lb slab of matter even if it wasn't likely to kill you.

there was a special on national geographic last night on killer jellyfish in austrailia.....there is one called the irukandji jellyfish. It is the size of a fingernail but it can pretty much kill you really quickly. two people got stung during the show on like a tiny portion of their bodies and the girl was sick for almost 2 weeks straight. I'm never swimming in australia.

I think australia also has that fish that jabs a spike-like thing into your foot when you step on it.

What about those snail like things in Gaum or somewhere that can thrust a venomous dart... I saw a show on the Disc. Channel where a Marine was holding two of them for a pic and they stung him. He died of the nuerotoxin in like less than a minute.
I'm glad we don't have that shit in the Gulf... and if we do, don't fuckin' tell me about it. I'm a diver and the worst thing I've had to deal with is curious baracudas. 1/20/2006 12:08:38 PM |

if you bounce on the top of them, they wont sting you
I think they mean the diver is behind the jellyfish in relation to the camera 1/20/2006 12:14:48 PM |
