I'm asking this in earnest... do you think there's anything that we can do to try to persuade the conf. to make sure each of the Big Four teams get a home and away?
I think the only reason they haven't is that they like to pretend that the ACC isn't run from Tobacco Road. But I'd be willing to bet that the other three student bodies would join us in an effort to retain a bit of our heritage, especially as charter members.
I suggest as a first step, we implore the Student Senate to pass a resolution suggesting this and to reach out to the other three SG's. I know it's a weak start and a long shot, but why not? If it's money they're interested in... very few Big Four games will fail to attract attention. 1/20/2006 10:19:08 PM |

If it happens, it won't be by any effort from us, I'm afraid.
Some dude on gamenight last night proposed a three division format, with each division playing a double round robin with themselves. You play two other teams twice, and everyone else once. Those teams would obviously cycle. His divisions:
North ----------------------- Boston College Maryland Virginia Virginia Tech
Central (?) ----------------------- Duke North Carolina State North Carolina Wake Forest
South ----------------------- Georgia Tech Clemson Florida State Miami
Of course, Maryland would go absolutely apeshit (along with everyone else... but especially Maryland) about having the Big Four grouped together like that. But damn it'd be sweet if we could do that. 1/20/2006 11:03:42 PM |

i think he meant for basketball only. i think they could call it the Everett Case Division, and then name the other two after two other important entities from the ACC, ideally from one of the schools in each division. 1/21/2006 2:24:02 AM |

^^ Football is totally separate from basketball. As it stands right now there are two divisions in football (Atlantic and Coastal), and no division in basketball. So approaching a setup like this would have no effect on what happens in Football. 1/21/2006 2:30:31 AM |

realistically, I don't give a shit about how this relates to football... don't get me wrong... I heart football... but doesn't the Big Weakest have like 67 basketball schools?
BTW... nobody likes Maryland anyway. They are the OSU of the ACC.

I have heard that Purdue and Indiana share the same problem with regards to scheduling and the way they insured their home and home series every year was to make one of the games not count towards the conference record if necessary, as if it were an out of conference game.
There was talk a year or so ago about Duke approaching State to do this for football. The only conflict with State right now are the Duke games in basketball (home and home) and football which are not guaranteed every year.
I see no reason why it couldn't work. 1/21/2006 9:54:21 AM |

I think the two division system is working as good as could be hoped for football, but we need to do what we know and know what we do. Hence what made the ACC is Big Four B-Bal. 1/21/2006 10:00:42 AM |

Im not sure I like the 3 divisions idea...I guess it just doesnt make sense as far as setting up a tourney bracket. The OOC conference game idea doesnt work either...lets say there was a Duke visit to State this year that didnt count...State wins, Duke wins the regular season, but if the Duke at State game counted, it would be a tie....that would suck ass. The only thing that needs to be done is do three primary rivals rather than two and getting rid of that Duke-Maryland travesty. Of course that means we will only play non-NC teams twice a year every four years.
And while we are on the subject of keeping Big Four rivalries, with the new 12 game seasons in football, the ACC should move to a 9 game schedule and allow two primary rivals...allowing us to play Duke every year, which is a lot better than playing Akron or The Citadel. 1/21/2006 10:43:33 AM |

Why would it be any different from the way it is now? The divisions would be PURELY for scheduling. Division records won't be kept. Just conference records. Seeding would be handled as it is now. Only thing that might change is the tiebreaking procedure.1/21/2006 2:29:43 PM |

The only drawback to this idea of 3 divisions is that historically those 4 teams in the Central division are 4 of the better teams with only Maryland really being close. We would beat up on each other and hand each other losses. A team like Georgia Tech could sweep Clemson, FSU, Miami all 6 games and finish higher in the conference than say us this year or UNC this year.
Bottom Line: It ain't happening. 1/22/2006 8:36:20 AM |

yea as much as i love playing against duke and unc i wouldn't be too thrilled about having to play two national championship caliber teams twice a year in our division will somone in the south can clean up in a weak division like that. On the topic of heritage, I think it would be awesome if for our one game in Reynolds each season we would actually schedule one of the Big 4 Teams. Have standing room only on the floor for students, and let the paying people have the upper seats. Then we could bring back the loudness of Reynolds and show the cameron crazies how its done. 1/23/2006 10:13:27 PM |

^^Well, if you only want 3 or 4 teams to go to the tourney from the ACC every year, that is a great idea. There are a limitted # of at large spots and The more conference games you play the more losses each team will have. You would have a bunch of 15 win teams from the ACC sitting home every March because they beat the shit outta each other every year. 1/24/2006 12:37:08 AM |

You're right, but it also isnt fair that Duke doesn't have to play NC State twice this year, when we clearly have a team that COULD beat them. Who else in the conference can give them a REAL run for their money? Basically by beating us on wednesday, they won the conference. If we were to play them again and beat them, they're one more loss away from being tied for first. Any way you look at it its fucked up, so lets fuck it up so that the big 4 get to play each other twice. It would be good for the $chool$ in the area al$o.1/24/2006 1:12:06 AM |

How many non-conference cupcakes would each team have to give up in order to have a home-home series through out the conference? The tv money from having a shitload of ACC games would more than make up for a couple of extra losses, IMO.
Sure some bubble team might not make the NCAA's, but the conference would be stronger in the long run. 1/24/2006 7:57:59 AM |

What would have been ideal is if the NCAA would have allowed the ACC to have a championship football game with a 10-team conference...then the ACC could have just added Miami and made the football schedule 9 games and the basketball schedule 18 and this thread wouldnt exist. 1/27/2006 12:58:33 PM |

ok here is an idea....
3 divisions of 4 teams each as mentioned above North, Central, South. Play each team in your division twice and everyone else once. That comes out to 14 conf. games. The last week of the regular season have a round robin based on finish in your division. i.e. the first place teams of all three divisions play each other, second place teams play each other, etc., etc. This would give everyone a total of 16 conf. games and you could use the final week to help determine seeding for the acc tourney. 2/15/2006 9:40:42 PM |
