For some reason whatever dvd i put in my ibook it does not read it....well these are mostly dvds that friends
have burned for me. Does anyone know what is the problem and how it can be resolved?

what kind of DVDs? Like movies or data? Do regular CDs work?

Try a permissions repair (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility) choose "repair permissions" after you click your hard drive.

You might also want to try a lens cleaner.

the dvd player opens and says "no supported disk available"
could it be due to the format of the dvds

If you only have problems reading burnt copies and not retail dvds, it might be a problem with the format or program used to burn the dvds.

^^^ Yeah if it's just burnt dvd's, try actually paying for movies. For some reason not stealing seems to work better most of the time.

Also, make sure it's being burned correctly. You can't just drag an mpeg or avi file onto a dvd and have it work in a dvd player or dvd player program. Quicktime or media player for the mac should be able to play most of what there is though if that's the case though. Tell us how your friend is burning the dvd's and what program they're using. Are they downloading mpeg's and shit and encoding them to dvd, or just ripping actual dvd's? DVD shrink is good for the latter.

does a RETAIL DVD work properly?

if not, then either you don't have a DVD player on your iBook, or your software is screwed up.

If so, then like others have said, whoever did the burning didn't do it right.

but the ones my friends burned for me like family guy shows and other stuff

Most Macs pre-2004 or so won't read ANYTHING on DVD+Rs

To correctly "burn a DVD for copied private use..."

Get a PC. Use 2 items: DVD Decrypter to rip the film, then DVD Shrink to burn it to a DVD-R. Make sure you also have Nero 6 installed as DVD Shrink will consult Nero 6 (must be version 6 or higher) to do the burning.

MacTheRipper and DVD2ONeX are the best DVD rippers on Mac (not free... buy they can be...). Also, Toast is good for burning them without the need to create a disc image.

yeah all the dvds burned are +R so thanks to the people who pointed it out.
I think that is the main reason I can't see any dvds on my mac.
I am going to try the -R and see how it works
