Chris McCray has been rumored (been talking about it on DC radio and Maryland Message Boards since last night) to be academically ineligible for the upcoming semester (his last at Maryland).

Maryland has a "winter semester" that starts at the beginning of January and ends (ended) this week (it only involves one class). Apparently he failed it.

Again, this is a rumor, but its pretty strong. Would be a HUGE blow to Maryland if true. Hello Mike Jones.

McCRAY INELIGIBLE FOR SPRING TERM

Senior guard will not play for remainder of season



COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Chris McCray, a senior guard on the University of Maryland men’s basketball team, will not be allowed to compete in the Spring 2006 semester due to NCAA academic standards.



McCray will be unavailable effective at the start of the spring term, which begins on Wednesday, Jan. 25. The first game he will miss will be the Terrapins’ game that evening at Georgia Tech.



“I’d first like to apologize to my family, teammates and coaches for not meeting NCAA standards, but I’ll continue to pursue my criminal justice degree,” said McCray. “I’ll learn from this experience and look forward to becoming very productive in life and as a student here at Maryland.”



Specific details regarding McCray’s academic issues will not be released due to the university’s compliance with the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act. Based on NCAA rules, he will be eligible to practice, but will not be able to play in games or travel with the squad.



“Chris’ career was outstanding here at the University of Maryland,” said head coach Gary Williams. “He has contributed a great deal to our success the last 3-1/2 years. I’m fully confident Chris will be successful in life.”



McCray was averaging 15.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.2 steals per game for the Terrapins this season.
