So my girlfriend wants a vaccum cleaner for our anniversary. She wants a small, bagless, upright.
Anyone have one they like, don't like, suggestions. I figured I might as well get her something she wants and can use, and use at my place! 1/24/2006 9:38:30 PM |

^ if she says she wants a vacuum and then gets upset at you for getting her a vacuum, i'd be confused... because she says she wants a vacuum. very simple. if she wants you to come up with something (i.e. buy her shiny stuff) then she should say that. Or say she wants to be surprised. Don't get upset for getting what you asked for....
BUT, if she does in fact want a vacuum... i second the roomba or the dyson 1/24/2006 10:31:39 PM |

I found some Dir Devil's online for 50 or so, and those were ones she sent me. Dirt Devil Dynamit was one. She wasn't to fond of the one I found on ebay for 15 + shipping, she was sketchy about it being used. However it still has the factory warrenty, and claims to only have been used twice 1/24/2006 10:41:19 PM |

You can get brand new Dirt Devil vaccuums at Walmart for less than $50
Why would you even consider ebay 1/24/2006 10:44:07 PM |

IMO (i'm a clean freak too):
Dirt Devil - i HATE these vacuums. my old roomate went through two of them (and not the cheap ones). they break constantly and they don't pick up worth a crap.
Bissell - i have one of these (got it before we were married). pretty decent vacuum really. the belt slid off a lot but it had good pickup. don't get the cheap ones tho.
Kenmore - we have a self propelled kenmore and LOVE it. it has GREAT pickup and we never have problems with the belts. it does squeak a little when i switch from bare floor to carpet. no big deal. good vaccuum for the money.
Rainbow - ok i don't know if they even make this brand anymore but if they do and she is a real neat freak... you cannot get much better. they use a water reservoir to capture dust. pain in the ass to use and drag around. but if you have allergies, it will do the job. be prepared to pay $texas for it tho.
Hoover - my mom has gone through two (both self propelled) in the last few years. they have great pick up but for some reason they don't want to stay together too well.
Eureka - never had one. but my grandma still has one from the 50's and my friend still uses hers from the 70's. i know the old bag ones were as well built as you'd want. i have heard some complaints about the newer ones.
Dyson - have to admit I am curious about this one.... maybe when (if ever) the Kenmore dies, we'll give it a shot. looks like a pretty decent machine.
Oreck - overpriced... alot imo.
no matter what, to get a decent vacuum, you will have to spend some $$$. like anything, don't get the cheapest but you don't necessarily have to get the most expensive. you do get what you pay for. look for a vacuum that can go easily from carpet to bare. don't worry too much about 50 billion accessories - i only use one of them anyway. you want max pick up ability.
oh, you will definitely need to get her something else too (i.e. flowers, massage, pedicure, earrings, etc).... she'll give you hell for years to come if all you get her is a vacuum.

Can't say much about newer vacuums, but both I and my parents have late 80's/early 90's vintage Hoovers that still work great. Take that for what it's worth.
And yes, if she specifically asked for a vacuum, by all means get her one. But get her something else "romantic" too.

ok, seriously, go ahead and get that girl a ring too.
Definitely get a Dyson if you got the skrilla. They're over $300.
If that's too high, I agree with Queti's recommendations. Dirt Devil vacs suck ass and are worthless. We have a bissell bagless HEPA vac, and it's very very very simple to clean all the filters and put them back, which is what sets it apart from other bagless vacs i've used.1/25/2006 10:26:06 AM |

not only is every dirt devil i have used about 400 decibels... but they don't pick up worth a damn either. My wife and I just bought a ~100 dollar Eureka bagless and it seems to do the job so far. 1/25/2006 10:44:54 AM |

I have a medium priced Bissel Bagless, and it seems to do the job okay. It's not *terrific* but I dont have the $texas for something better.
It's not insanely loud, and as long as you dont let an idiot roomate use it you shouldnt have problems. (I had one that didnt realize that you had to ever empty it, proceeded to keep using it wondering why it didnt pick up stuff well untill the whole thing was clogged and then burned out a belt. The belts are the things i've had the most problems with really, and not too much of that)
It's relatively easy to disassemble and put back together too I might add, and all the filters are easy to pull out and clean.
Essentially I recommend them if yo'ure on a budget such that you cant get one of the really nice $texas ones.

the whole water filtration thing is stupid. water filters fine, but if you have allergies, it's best to have a HEPA filter attachment. nothing will get the air cleaner AND hepa vaccum cleaners are cheaper than $400+ rainbows. it's a scam. only sold by door to door. multi-level marketing, ala amway.
i've got a bissell bagless with hepa (they are all pretty much the same and getting a hepa filter costs $8.88). it was $70 at wal-mart. easy to use, reliable, picks up a lot of dirt. you won't be able to find anything that performs as well in the same price range.
dyson's are hyped too much. i wonder if the people who reccomend them have ever used one on a daily basis. i have and it really wasn't THAT much better than my bissell. the only thing i really enjoyed about it was the reusable HEPA filter. that's all.

I have a dyson, they are pretty awesome, no filters or bags to replace.
My dad has one of those lil red Miele vac's. We have a dog at home though, so the thing smells AWFUL every time it's run now.
it's a damn good vac though

We've had a Rainbow in the family for about 15 years and its still going strong. It's expensive but it really is awesome and really worth the money over a long period of time. You'll be amazed at the crap it picks up and probably be grossed out too. On a side note, my mom has been using a roomba over the last year and gave me the Rainbow. She's happy with the roomba but she doesnt have any carpet in the house, its all tile or real wood flooring, so not sure how good it works on carpet.1/25/2006 6:02:54 PM |
