Occasionally my monitor likes to put out a really really awful high pitch sound. If I turn off the speakers it's still there, it doesn't go away until I cut off the monitor. Any clue what could be causing this?

Is the monitor:
a) CRT or LCD?
b) new or old?

its the flyback transformer causing the noise, just get an LCD monitor, they dont make any noise

Change the refresh rate to something other than 60hz.

If a game/application controls this, you'll need to change in there as well.
