yeah the hilltopper is my favorite mascot. And they have no fear of anyone ever getting offended by their mascot unless some SUV coalition starts to rise up 1/26/2006 9:36:16 PM |

A Kentucky resident is called a Hilltopper. It's just Kentucky's version of a person being called a Hoosier or a Tarheel. No idea on the mascot though...1/27/2006 12:33:05 PM |

^ seriously, wtf is a tarheel? a foot with a black spot, what kind of logo is that?
*cue the retards desperately trying to explain where the term "tarheel" comes from and getting into an arguement over which war originated it*

Located atop one of the highest points in Southcentral Kentucky, Western boasts one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation. But there is more to Western than its park-like campus. There’s a special sense of belonging-the “Western Spirit”-that is well known to students, alumni and fans.
The evolution of the nickname "Hilltoppers" is obvious to those who have seen the Western Kentucky campus. The operations of Western Kentucky State Normal School were moved from its forerunner, Southern Normal School, to a commanding hill on the southwestern portion of Bowling Green on February 4, 1911. The move was completed as the entire student body marched to the new site, carrying various articles of school equipment. Since the summit of "the Hill" rises 232 feet above nearby Barren River and the comparatively level plain that surrounds it, it was only natural that the athletes who represented the institution should come to be known as the "Hilltoppers." Still, the name did not come into use until the 1925-26 school year. Prior to that, Westen teams were commonly referred to as "Pedagogues" or "Teachers" The first WKU uniform to bear the Hilltopper nickname was worn in the 1925-26 basketball season. --------------------------------------------
Western Kentucky University's unique "Red Towel" tradition originated with the late E.A. Diddle, one of the most successful coaches in history.
Through 1,062 Hilltopper basketball games, Diddle clutched a red towel. He chewed on it, threw it, cried on it, waved it at fans and used it to signal his players. Though Mr Diddle has been identified primarily with Hilltopper basketball, he actually coached four different sports during his long and illustrious tenure on the Hill, including football, baseball, and women's basketball. Overall, the four sports he coached were a combined 1,040-487-5 - that's a 68 percent success ratio!
The Red Towel became synonymous with Coach Diddle and he became synonymous with Western's outstanding athletic heritage. And, now fans at Hilltopper sporting events wave red towels as they cheer for "Big Red."
The concept of WKU's Red Towel athletics logo was developed by former Hilltopper athlete, coach, and athletics director John Oldham in 1971. Dr. Chuck Crume, a long-time faculty member in the Department of Physical Education and Recreation, and a well-known wildlife artist, rendered the original artwork for the logo.

grimace always creeped me out as little kid - maybe it was the fact i didn't know what the hell he/she/it was exactly - it looks no better in red - the name hilltoppers is original, it just seems like it'd be hard to come up with a quality representative mascot for it 1/27/2006 4:08:50 PM |
