^^^ 4/4 is common time. it means 4 beats per measure with the quarter note getting the beat. It's the most common time signature for music. Stuff with 7/2 or other non-common time signatures have a different flow and sound to them. Mixed meter's even more noticeably different, where it'll alternate from say 3/4 and 7/16 or something. anyways...

Best non-4/4 song of all time...Money (Pink Floyd) in 7/4

Also, Norweigan Wood (The Beatles) is 3/4

Ben Folds Five - "Boxing"
Elliot Smith - "Waltz #2 (XO)"
Badly Drawn Boy - "Once Around the Block" (wool hat = 3/4)
The Dismemberment Plan - "Gyroscope" (funky meter, it's mostly 4/4 but drops an extra beat here and there)
Dave Brubeck - "Take Five"

There are more, but I don't wanna thumb through my library to find them.

yeah, Money is a good example of mixed time signature

GNR - You Ain't the First (6/8)

Alice in Chains - Frogs (3/4 with some odd syncopations)

Safety Dance is 4/4, unless you wanted to write it in "cut time", which I could see doing, but that's essentially the same thing as 4/4.

I bet Steve Vai and Joe Satriani have some stuff, but I lost all of their stuff i had on my computer. Oh, and I'll bet money that Frank Zappa has stuff in all kinds of time signatures.

"the landlord is dead" ~ do make say think

it feels like it's in 14, but it could be in 7 i suppose.

"oh comely" ~ neutral milk hotel (it's in 3/4)

i don't think this thread should include songs in 3 either, that's just too easy. i'd say a good 10 percent of songs out there are in 3/4. maybe i'm wrong.

oh yeah and to spookyjon, i think kat showed me a while back how pyramid song is actually in 4/4.

i think i listen to too much elliott smith and instrumental rock. it has warped my sense of reality.

and 6/8 can be can be pretty different from 3/4, if it's broken up 3 -3 as opposed to 2-2-2.

I starting counting some of the signature changes in some Don Caballero songs, but I don't really want to spend that much time.

So, yeah.

Don Caballero.

US Maple.

"7/4" by Broken Social Scene.

"5/4" by Gorillaz.

"5-4=Unity" by Pavement.

Ooooooooh, I forgot "5-4=Unity"! It's three measures of 5, then one measure of 6...I always liked telling people it was in 21/4.

"2+2=5" is in 7/4.

Animal Collective's "Who Could Win a Rabbit" is 3/4 most of the time, but they're dropping beats like, uh, it's hot. Or something.

Left out the important part of that quote. The majority of the song is in 4/4, like Duke said, except for those parts.
