I've been trying to figure out how to do this for the longest, and can't find a good faq to help me set up.

Im trying to transfer files from my PC to my brothers PC in Cary...is that even possible if you arent on the same network?

Plus, we both have routers installed, could that be blocking our IPs?

thanks for the help in advance, hopefully someone knows what Im trying to say cause im not quite sure if i can word it any clearer

yes

you must open a port on the router belonging to the hosting computer.

for example, if your brother is hosting the ftp server he needs to open the port on his router to his computer.

ftp is port 21
remote assistance i think is 3389 if it uses the same port as remote desktop.

instructions on open the port in the router will be in the documentation for the router.

if this is just a one-time deal, ZIP the files up and use either AIM file transfer or one of these websites:
http://www.transferbigfiles.com
http://www.yousendit.com

if you want to learn or do this repeatedly, then do what Shaggy said and open a port for FTP (by default it's 21 but you can change that to whatever you want if your ISP is blocking or monitoring that port) - use an FTP server like Serv-U (probably one of the simpler ones out there) on your computer and then an FTP client like SmartFTP on your brother's computer to connect to your IP.

^^ yea thats what we do now, but when you start getting into the gig range of folder sizes, it goes pretty slow

and we both have flashfxp, but youre saying i need to get that Serv-U thing to make my PC an FTP server?

If you both have routers and both have Windows, check out Hamachi (http://www.hamachi.cc)

It basically creates a VPN between you and other computers, and can pass through routers and firewalls with no problem.

Once you have that, you can use basic windows networking, FTP, or whatever method you prefer.

this is possible i did it like a year ago

you'd have to pm State409b, he helped me set mine up

its just complicated like figuring out ip's and port forwarding and all that gay shit

you need a client and a server, you can get both free, cuteftp is a good one, gozilla is i think the name of the type of server

I use http://www.radmin.com for doing file transfers and other stuff to/from my home pc and work. you'll need to set up the router port forwarding on both ends to allow the connection but then you just type in the remote computer's IP address and type the password and you can either do full remote control or do a file transfer.
