I keep hearing the g35s and 350zs drive by my house and i must say that is the worst sounding car ever. it almost sounds like there is a speaker playing arcade engine sounds out the back of the car.
i'd rather hear some ricer pipe on a car cause at least that sounds mechanical.

On the other hand small block fords with big cams and NON CHAMBERED mufflers sound great.

I like:
Raspy e46 M3's with loud exhaust.
Ford 302's.
Type R's and S2000's hitting 8k+ RPM with nice, but not obnoxiously loud, exhaust.

I dislike:
Fart canned run-of-the-mill 4 cylinders.

g35's and 350z's sound like any other flat crank car.

I like the sound of a high revving straight 6, straight piped sbc, and anything spooling a big turbo. I guess I like cars that fully saturate their exhausts

I've got to say, the Boxster that I drove had a sweet sound once it hit 4k RPM. My girlfriends Forester has a similar sound, but less aggressive. Must be the boxer engines.

Supra's would be the best sounding import I think... even my Mark III sounds nasty. It sounds much faster than it actually is. Second I would have to of course say any Rx-7 with Racing Beat exhaust.

SR20DET's sound nice. D16's do not.

For domestics, well I love the sound of my buddy's Cobra with a magnaflow catback.

I dont see the wonderfulness of inline 6's

Ive seen plenty of dyno runs and vids of them and theyre nothing special-sounding.

example:
240sx with 2JZ
http://www.clipshack.com/Clip.aspx?key=6ECC43537E21BC8B
(the setup is badass though)

350z (supercharged but same exhaust note)
http://videos.streetfire.net/Player.aspx?fileid=C101A905-2A51-40C4-BCF3-D647DD29B56E&term=350z%20dyno&p=0

WRX's and SRT4's sound nice as well

Interesting:
PSD with 4" downpipe billowing smoke thru dual 5" stacks (chipped, and whatnot)
Hennessey twin turbo viper
F-body with SLP system
supra/BMW I6's
my poor little car - stock 1.5, 2.25" cat back w/MAC muffler - raspy, but a bit sick sounding... its mine, so i love it

terrible:
stock 4's with canister mufflers
old domestic V-8s with 2" duals = most horrible sound ever

best: bbc 468 cid (454 with some overage), no cats, shorty headers (maybe), 3chamb flowmasters, and iirc, an h-pipe...wow

Gen III GM's always sound good, as does a typical MAC'd (roommate's 97 cobra) or 2ch flowmaster (old school 40 series) mustang

i work at nissan and i love the vq35's...the nismo 350's sound heavenly, but i suppose sound is subjective anyway

worst: flowmaster'd 3rd gen f-body...yuck

I'm not a big fan of flowmasters on anything especially not chevys cause most have resonators allready and then you're going to alter the sound more w/ chambered i like the the raspy sounds engines make on their own dynomax/magnaflow etc. all the straight through mufflers sound nice imho.

i've never heard that nissan 3.5 w/ anything other than stock pipes.

the 4.6 motors even sound great w/ big cams in them

i like the jeep inline w/ straight pipes too.... turbo motors also sound good cause most of those guys are aware that high velocity air + chambers = bad.

Old GMC truck 305 V6.

Any straight six. Preferrably 'yota twin cam sixes or Nissan L-series.

RX7's running through straight pipe a la Spec 7, IT7, etc classes.

a four-banger set up well without an obnoxious fartpipe.

As far as V8's go, they bore the shit out of me. Heard so damn many of them.

hehehe my fave was a cammer 427 @ 8500 rpm on an engine dyno...

but yeah the rotaries sound awesome so do all the new aston martins... every last one of them.
vipers also sound cool when you open up the exhaust.

exhaust note is primarily determined by the type of engine (inline 4, v6, transverse mount, etc etc) then by the vehicle itself. then muffler type (also cats or no, resonator?), then i would say finally the tip and the angle the exhaust exits at.

murano/fx35 sound quite... interesting for stock vehicles. much better than the 350z. ive heard a 350z with a $2000 nismo exhaust and it was sad. maybe it burned in later on, but that day it was sorry sounding.

stock tundra v8's also interesting.

non stock stuff? my crx with the "sidepipe" was quite interesting, but it made as much noise through the intake too so...
i used to know a guy with a late model dodge with no more than just some lil no-name aftermarket mufflers and it sounded abdsolutely badass. im not telling what they were. my buddys '02 GT sounded great with MAC exhaust. i mean though who hasnt heard a million nice aftermarket exhausts?

worst of all time is any old automatic honda/toyota 4cyl with a "fart can". rediculouossss

honestly the length of the pipe and where it exits does a whole lot too.

i can disconnect mine right behind the muffler and it gets really loud just as a sound and then it echos under the car too.

but yeah i think flat motors sound the best followed by inlines
and i like cars that don't like idle (sitting there lopeing over etc.)

the bigger the motor the better too.
i even like diesels with those 5-6" exhausts... its neat

but like i said stock that 3.5 liter sounds like a crappy arcade speaker belting out what it thinks an engine should sound like

anyone heard the blue 6.0 PSD with the flat bed... muffler and tailpipe removed... maybe the downpipe silencer also? very interesting whistle when it builds boost. The 6.0s and the duramax diesels seem very interesting with some exhaust mods b/c of the distinct "straight-piped V8" sound under full throttle, with the addition of the godawful turbo whistle that comes in a second or so later.

best - any AMG V8 - a smooth mechanical whirring backed up by the resonant bass sound

runner up award goes to any Ducati

worst - the filled with gravel sound of a pushrod V6 (ford or chevy - doesn't matter really)

runner up award goes to the BMW 1.9L 4 Cylinder - lots of noise and vibration, very little acceleration.

Best period:
Ferrari or Lamborghini or Pagani(Mercedes AMG) V12s (more specifically, the bored F1 motor in a 333SP)

Best reasonable:
The 6.1 liter Hemis and the C5 Z06 (haven't heard the C6 yet) and any of the Porsches
I also like the sound of the 350Z/G35

Worst:
Any econobox with a hole in the muffler.
