Its a Best Buy warranty replacement so it has to come from best buy.

I have to spend at least $999 min and am willing to spend up to $1500. The one I had that broke 4 times was a Toshiba , but I dont know that any of the brands on there are better. (durability is key)
What do yall think????? 2/9/2006 12:33:19 AM |

I am looking at the specs and even if I do an even swap dollar for dollar the specs are retardely higher than what I had on my old one for the money. I am wondering about manufacturers though. What brands have you people owned and what were perks/drawbacks to them? Were they durable? Did they ever need repairs, how often? 2/9/2006 12:51:30 AM |

Not sure if you had a bad Toshiba or what but I've had mine for over a year and a half and take it back and forth between work and home every single day and haven't had a single problem. I'd stick with Toshiba. Just from my experience I'd stay away from HP and Gateway.
Also, don't know how long you've got left on your Best Buy replacement warranty but you should definitely look into the manufacturers warranties. Majority of them offer the accidental drop and spill coverage - similar to what you see on the Dell commercials. Best Buy won't replace a LCD or fix any damage from drops or spills. Most of the time it's the same price as Best Buy's warranty or cheaper. 2/9/2006 8:28:32 AM |

check cnet reviews for any model you're interested in buying (not nescessarily the exact same specs, but the model range). Sony, Toshiba, Gateway, and HP have all made laptops that suck and some really good ones too. The ratio's change from brand to brand, but even "good" brands can make shitty laptop lines now and then. 2/9/2006 9:02:03 AM |

What's wrong with HP? I have an HP laptop and a desktop I got in 98 and both work great. 2/9/2006 9:14:03 AM |

get an Apple Powerbook..max out the RAM; if the factory-new are too expensive for your budget, then checked out Apple's refurbished. These things are practically brand new notebooks and have a significant lower price than the factory-new notebooks. 2/9/2006 9:21:40 AM |

Fuck Apple. Their laptops are VERY overpriced considering the hardware you get. 2/9/2006 9:47:30 AM |

I have a fujitsu and, just as everyone else I know who owns one, can not complain about a single thing - it's a fantastic laptop with probably the best screen I've seen (and I've seen plenty in grad school) 2/9/2006 9:50:17 AM |

I have been considering getting an apple to play around with. I dont know if i wanna go that route on this laptop when the last apple I touched was an Apple IIe. I was thinking more along the lines of buying a used one or an apple desktop to see how I liked it. Probably need to stick with PC for this purchase until I know all of the software I use can be obtained for the Apple. 2/9/2006 9:53:02 AM |

I have to say this thing is fucking kick ass! Oh yeah and best buy now offers service plans that cover "accidental damage" (exactly what I need)
It is huge, but the size is worth it for the size of the screen. I have not tried any of the windows media center shit yet, but will post feedback on that once I do.
I came with two remotes, one fits inside the PCMCIA slot for easy storage. The other is the Windows Media Center Remote. It has an acessory card that is a TV tuner with an antenna or cable tv. 200GB of hard disk space and 2ghz processor.
I am happy with it. Now to find a laptop bag that the fucker will fit in. 2/9/2006 10:59:09 PM |

is this a replacement for the jager-smashed laptop? or was this a victim of some other crime against technology?
How's that graphics card by the way, I'm not familiar with it. Tried any games on the laptop yet?
^^ aww, I saw that and was incredibly dissapointed when I saw it had a 4200 rpm hdd! I didn't realize they actually put those in systems with new high end processors. I mean, is a 5400 rpm drive that much more expensive? like what... 20 bucks more?
meh, performance boost isn't THAT huge from a 5400 rpm drive, but it just seemed odd. maybe it's for battery life. The biggest bleh on the sony there is the the shared video ram. The hp pavillion he got actually has dedicated video ram.

naw the jager laptop was my friends averatec and his only PC. this one was a replacement for my old toshiba that legitimately broke three times with little abuse and best buy replaced it when it was fucked up the fourth time.
I wanna mess with this thing some more but i just got back from the bar and am too tired. Will look it over some more tomorrow and post more. 2/10/2006 1:05:42 AM |

It's a SATA drive so it will be faster than the 4200 you are thinking about.2/10/2006 8:56:59 AM |
