and then rebroadcast it? reason being, i'd like to set up a wireless router up to pick up my main wireless signal, and then rebroadcast it to extend the effective range.
can it work like that? 2/11/2006 3:03:26 PM |

get a wrt54g v1,2,3,4 NOT 5 then load it up with a custom firmware (DD-WRT v23 works) put it in WDS repeater mode.

is there any security difference between the linksys with 4.0 and a custom firmware? 2/11/2006 8:48:30 PM |
tjoshea All American 4906 Posts user info edit post |
^ not anything that you can do over the web interface but you could potentially run a ppp-ssh or ipsec or something on top of a custom 4.0 firmware
however .. I believe WPA2 is considered secure at this point in time just run WPA2 /w TKIP + AES 2/12/2006 1:11:42 AM |

can't you just buy a repeater rather than a whole router? 2/13/2006 3:17:32 PM |

Ok say you do this, router #2 rebroadcasting #1's signal. If you have a pc physically connected to router #2 would it also be on that network that is being rebroadcasted or would the pc have to be on wireless? 2/13/2006 3:24:50 PM |

co-worker picked up 2 WRT54G's Figured they wouldn't work since they are v5.0 and they of course did not. Heard that the VPN 54G router will allow us to do what we're wanting to do. They are $175 each. Anyone know of a cost effective solution other than getting our hands on 2 wrt54g routers <5.0? 2/14/2006 6:59:45 PM |

74.99 once you click on "special pricing."
Not as cheap as using another inexpensive router, but it's ready-made to do the job.
This one's even cheaper, but d-link:

and here's a netgear wall-plug one:

Of course, there's incompatability issues with these things, so read the customer reviews and find out what they don't work with. The linksys one seems to work wonderfully as long as you have a compatable setup.

question... do i have to load the special firmware onto both routers for it to work, or can I just fiddle with the one? 2/14/2006 8:07:36 PM |
