ok- best performance check

i'd have to buy paint for racing stripes so that's out

and my comp already has a hole in it- i yanked out the A: drive because i didn't liek the sounds it made

how much overclock is safe? i'm at a stout 750 mhz at the moment

Dont try to overclock a 750mhz machine. It's not worth it.

You wont notice a difference +-200mhz

those are fine.

Try rolling back from winXP, to win2k. XP has a lot of fluff.

I fail to see how someone wouldn't notice a more than 25% speed increase

+200mhz on the processor is not going to give him a 25% overall speed increase.

And I doubt you would be able to tell the difference between a 750mhz machine and a 1ghz machine, without benchmarks.

Quicker = more RAM. If its an older desktop (sounds like it), you can add a 256MB chip to it for extremely cheap ($20 or less). We still run 1Ghz machines at work just fine on XP. Otherwise, you'll honestly waste your time and beat your head trying to tweak all the settings for maybe a 5-10% performance increase. The RAM will increase performance by at least 33%.

Quick tip: Remove ALL of your startup programs except for antivirus.
-Programs, Startup
-In registry edtior, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Downlaod TweakXP as well if you really want to dig deep.

you're doing pretty good on the running programs

but you can kill:
wdfmanager.exe (driver support for windows media player 10)
acoustic.exe (sound card tweaker)
e_s412L1.exe (epson printer program; if removing this disables your printer, then just reinstall printer and leave the program alone )

get an older/lighter version of aim, aim shouldn't use 40mb of ram. also, better check what service that is using 40mb of ram, sounds suspicious.

"i'm at a stout 750 mhz at the moment..."

yeah on a machine like that you really need to bump up the ram

you can safely disable at least 50% of your running services
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&rls=SUNA%2CSUNA%3A2006-02%2CSUNA%3Aen&q=xp+services

because very often, those people feel entitled to those things.

while this is not always the case, it's the one that makes people want to punch other people.
