... on this one. Not that I'm computer retarded (tho I'm sure I'm close in some eyes), its just that this may be a little over my head.
Somehow, the he got a virus which 80% of the time, redirects any attempt to goto a webpage to some gambling sites, and 20% of the time just shuts the box down.
I'd D/L adaware or some similiar product, but I can't get to the page, because it redirects me to said sites. Sooooo I'm a bit out of ideas on this one.
My next thought is to just reformat, but that may be a bit extreme. Anyone wanna suggest another course of action? 2/17/2006 12:41:40 PM |

It's on his computer... not mine.
I don't have a thumbdrive.
Right now, his puter isn't showing up on the network. It used to. I'd already thought of that...
Yeah, he's got the same antivirus we all do, I put it on there for him. Didn't do him much good tho. 2/17/2006 2:36:48 PM |

don't have a CD burner that works
don't have a floppy drive
Look, short of me going out and buying a thumbdrive, or somehow getting his box back on the network.. getting a file to his puter isn't really going to be an option.
I'm simply asking if anyone has had an issue like this before, or knows anything I can do to fix it without wiping his disk and reinstalling everything.
Furthermore, why are you being an asshole? I'm just asking for help. Yet you sit there and flame me in caps for it. Jesus christ, I'm sorry I don't have a USB drive, or any other means of getting a file from Box A to Box B. Get the fuck over yourself. 2/17/2006 2:51:28 PM |

Ooo that might be pretty cool. Try chanting "Abra Cadabra" a lot and see if that fixes it. 2/17/2006 3:01:14 PM |

OK, to recap.
His computer is completely unusable to the internet. No pages can load and therefore no new files can be downloaded.
You have 0 ways of getting new files to his computer because of your lack of a cd burner, diskette drive, crossover cable or thumb drive.
His computer will not be fixed without a few cleaning programs loaded.
You then procede to bitch and moan because of the situation. Lots of people have seen this issue before, and they are trying to help you. He is being an asshole because you do not have any of the resources needed to use the solutions that they would giv you.
An analogy would be this.
Car is out of gas. Need to get to class.
Suggestions offered: 1) Get your other car and go. 2) Take the bus. 3) Friend can drive you. 4) Walk to class. 5) Take your bike. 6) Skip class.
Your responses: 1) I only have 1 car. 2) No Bus stop, god... 3) I don't have any friends close by. 4) WAY TO FAR GENIUS. 5) IT IS WINTER MORON, DON'T YOU KNOW ANYTHING? 6) LISTEN YOU ASSHOLE, I ASKED FOR HELP, If YOU CAN NOT HAND DELIVERY A SOLUTION THAT TAKES ME NO EFFORT I WILL BITCH AND MOAN.

Thank you. Someone understands. I'm looking for solutions that exist without the aid of an outside file.
If none exist, just say "Nope, can't do a single thing. Nothing you can do in windows will possibly help you. Go ahead and wipe the disk."

Seriously.. if you can't get to a lab with a floppy disk.. borrow a burner or thumbdrive.. you could potentially be wasting a lot of time (and data that could be saved) by just chalking it up to "oh well" and reformatting it. 2/17/2006 3:58:03 PM |

Or if you're on campus, call 515-HELP and have a resnet come out and do all that stuff for you. People who have no means of transfering files between computers are one of the reasons the ResNet techs have as many calls as they do.
Come on though, not having some viable means of transfering files that doesn't involve the internet as the only transfer medium is like asking for trouble. That's like not having a working phone or something. Bad idea.
You need to buy a thumb drive or get that cd burner of yours working, for your own good. Do it. You can find 128 mb thumb drives at the bookstore for 20 bucks, and 64 mb ones for about as much as a sandwhich various places online. Just break down and freaking buy one or fix the cd burner.

You know if you wanted you could stop by the bookstore and ask them for one of those free CD's from the resnet guys (go to the back in computer connections where I work). It has ad-aware and such on it if I'm not mistaken.
Calling the resnet folk would also resolve the problem pretty quickly. Spending $1 on 1 CD-R and burning every spyware and hijack-detecting/trojan-removal tool on the market onto one CD in a lab and then fixing his PC like magic would also work.
Reformatting would also work and probably work faster than trying to fix all the little spyware programs that he loaded onto his computer. (Assuming he doesn't have any data that he can't lose.) 2/18/2006 12:44:18 AM |

Thanks. Got it, and got enough crap off the system to get back online. Been cleaning up the rest.
Speaking of registry.. yeah, I'm not smart enough to go in and start changing/deleting stuff in there. However, I think there is something wrong with his. Can anyone recommend a good registry repair program that is free and will fix any/all errors in bad registry?2/18/2006 5:00:12 PM |
Sayer now with sarcasm 9841 Posts user info edit post |
So most of the issues are gone.
I've D/Led: Symantec Antivirus AdAware SpyBot S&D and a couple of registry doctors
I've used them repeatedly, and after finding and smiting many bad things.. they can't find anything on the system.
However, there is still something on my system which will randomly open Firefox and direct it to an add on a site. Or it'll just hijack whatever Firefox window is open and direct it to an ad.
wtf?

Har har. In my defense to "How are you posting here then?":
If he is posting here he can get access to the internet throgh a computer somewhere. So he could use the mighty powers of intelect to download spybot, adaware, etc. from the computer he is currently connected to and transfer it to his friends computer via what I though was common media (blank CD/thumbdrive/3.5" disk/etc.). If I meant "How are you posting here then?" from your friend's computer then why would I tell him to put it on a thumbdrive in the very next sentence? Here's a hint: you wouldn't need a thumbdrive to transfer it to the computer you already have it downloaded to.
