also i've been holding off on buying a new tv waiting for 1080p to make a stronger presence. I think i'm just gonna go buy a 720p lcd instead.

On top of that, i've heard that for screens smaller than 40"... 1080p won't be a noticeable difference, especially when compared to the step from 480i to 720p

Sure, some people won't be able to see the difference, but a lot of people will. If you're the kind of person to notice something like picture quality, then you'll see the difference.

If 1080p can do everything a 720p screen can do and more. why buy 720p now and 1080p 6-12 months from now? save yourself the money and just get whats going to last without having to upgrade.

Well... if i wasn't so damn poor... i might buy a $500 hd-dvd player... or a $1000 bluray player after the HDCP fiasco ends.

Better yet, since the PS3 will support dual 1080p displays, i should break down and buy 2 right. And while we're at it, name one display that accepts 1080p signals (through HDMI) that i can buy in person in the triangle area.

The sony xbr sxrd displays have a pretty decent upconvert to 1080p so most things look pretty decent.

Explain to me how a LCD or DLP based TV displays 1080i, oh yeah, it deinterlaces then scales it, and in doing so usually makes it look like shit.

There is a reason high end video users buy scalers upwards of 800$ to drive their projectors , and that reason is simply that the 4$ IC you got at national or maxim just doesnt cut it at >40" .

If he is buying this for a smaller LCD, then you dont need 1080p anyways.

you don't need an "HD DVD player" - just buy a dvd player with progressive scan and component outs - $30 at any major retailer should do it.

i am a 138lbs man quinn. i may not move a tv much, but it is a factor. my new tv is 150 which aint so bad for me and someone else, but is approaching the border for me. i didnt buy a decently priced sony 36" cuz it weighed 200+ lbs heh. but yeah they do look sexy and last forever.

I'm rockin' a 720p plasma; love it's color depth and clarity.

If I was in the market right now I'd get around 32-36" plasma with the apps. Might consider a Vizio for their cooler apps, but still a fan of panasonic plasma.

And HDCP sucks balls; both as a content producer and consumer.

I didn't read much about this when that article was released (which was like a week after my dad bought a G1, so I was mildly interested at the time) but I would have thought they could have fixed the issue with a firmware update or something, but it looks like it's more complicated than that. I assume (?) that newer models don't have this issue. but I don't know for sure.

It's been prevalent in EVERY plasma they make since 2008.

It's not fixed in the 2010 models either.

I was choosing between Samsung and Panasonic, and the 100 page threads about this on AVSForum are what ultimately steered me to Samsung. Panasonic plasmas are the best out there ( Pioneer is out of the plasma game), but I am pretty damn impressed with Samsung.

They (Samsung) have been really damn good about regular firmware updates to fix and improve their sets. I havent' needed anything, pretty much in love with my 7000 series plasma.

The panasonic problems come only to the people who are running the thing at 100% brightness in the first place. Mine sits around 65% and I've never seen this varying backlight issue.

These are probably the people who like to see green and red at 2000% saturation instead of a calibrated setting.

we still don't have any 1080p channels. It's been four years. Outside of sports there isn't much point I suppose .
