What do you do for your cardio workouts? Excercises, duration, intensity, heartrate, etc...
Do you monitor your heartrate, or do zone training?
I just want to know what other people do, and get some new ideas for myself. 2/20/2006 11:22:40 AM |

i do about 45 minutes on the treadmill. my heart rate is at a steady 155-160 during the whole duration. nearing the end I crank up the speed till I maintain about 170 for 3-5 minutes.

yeah you need to monitor your heartrate.
theres a zone you need to be in for cardio vs fat burning. 2/20/2006 11:27:27 AM |

i think cardio is about 85% of your max heart rate. 2/20/2006 11:28:51 AM |

^ and ^^ I know all that stuff, I just want to find out what other people do.
I have a chest strap heartrate monitor that I use at the gym, its way more accurate than the handgrips on any of the cardio machines.
There are 3 target heartrate zones: Z1 = 60% - 70% of your max heartrate Z2 = 70% - 80% of your max heartrate Z3 = 80%+ of your max heartrate
For the past few weeks, I've been doing a 5min warmup then intervals of 4min at Z2 then 1-1/2min at Z1, for up to 40 minutes. Yesterday I tried going a full 60 minutes at Z1 on the elliptical machine. I managed to keep my heartrate average at 155 for the full 60 minutes.
What I really want to know is what other people do for cardio. Thanks Amsterdam718 2/20/2006 12:12:06 PM |

During bulking up phase I do 30-45 minutes of cardio using the Ellipse, Stair Climber, Rowing Machine, and Bike. I keep my heart rate around 180+ and only do it in the mornings. When lowering my body fat I do same thing except keep heart rate kinda low and do it 2-3 times a day. 2/20/2006 1:02:19 PM |

What is a decent heart rate monitor to use? They seem to range in price from $30 to $200 but I have no clue what to look for. Do the strapless monitors work at all or is it pretty much a must to have one? 2/20/2006 1:52:38 PM |

^^^ I havent tried any of the classes yet, but there are tons of classes during the week. I need to try out this new BodyPump class
^^ I have a Polar F6 heartrate monitor, it does way more than I need right now. I use it mainly to measure my current, avg, and max heartrate. Also the cardio machines at O2 pick up the heartrate from the chest strap and display it on screen, so I dont have to focus on holding the handgrips or checking the watch every 15 seconds.

I personally go off perceived effort, cadence and power over heart rate.
Cardiac drift is very common in runs. The longer you run, the more your heart rate will drift.
For those of you that are going well over 180, you're probably above your lactate threshold (which is not aerobic), unless you're a Kenyan. 2/20/2006 5:12:55 PM |
