So I just bought a FM transmitter for my ipod to use in my 89 Omni. I'd like for the transmitter to turn off when I shut the car off but power continues to be sent to the lighter socket when I take the keys out. Is there any sort of automatic way to do this or maybe a plugin with a switch I can flip when I leave the car?

get one of those 12v power outlets and wire it on a circuit that turns off with the key. a cheap test light or a wiring diagram will tell you which ones are like that. make sure it goes through the fuse though-you don't want a fire.

^^yeah, the problem with that is that since the car is so old the lighter socket only works when the thing is plugged in at a certain angle and then I have to fiddle with it to work properly. I'd rather have to not take the thing out each time I get out.

probably should have stated this to begin with

^where would I get on of these. already been to the car parts store and didn't see one.

walmart has them, I think, but I'm sure you could get one at advance or auto zone. they are real cheap. just make sure you don't bypass the fuse

it runs, and gets me 10 miles to and from work each day. its worth it.

is there any reason I couldn't rewire the lighter socket to a different circuit (one that turns off)

you could, but if you have to fiddle with it, it would be better to buy a 3 dollar socket

buy an in-line switch and ghetto-rig it onto the transmitter power line

easiest solution

Correct me if I'm wrong on this...

There's going to be an ignition switched power wire that goes into the stereo wiring harness. So you could splice the switched +12v source with another wire. At the end of that wire you could use an insulated quick-disconnect terminal, male or female, which you could then mate to a wire cut from your transmitter.

All you need is a wiring diagram (or some guess-work) to locate a switched +12v wire, a wire cutter/crimper, and some connectors from radio shack or auto zone.

Repeat that setup for the ground wire.
