...but I still prefer to use a spray gun. I'm lazy like that.

You gotta go about halfway down to get to it.

I'm gonna try this tomorrow on something, some piece of scrap. Seriously, I gotta know if this works, I wouldn't be surprised if this fucktard is just scheming, "ooh, I'm gonna get'em good, they'll be painting their cars with ROLLERS. muahahaha." I'll take pics to show the mess I made. Any suggestions? piece of aluminum? should I go get something from dillon? pipe/sheet from a hardware store?

You need to get you an old fender to practice on. Remember to thin the paint very well...and I would use regular mineral spirits (stoddard solvent); the drying rate is pretty slow, which will help with the leveling of the finish.

^I have a gauge cluster from a '57 or '58 chevy that I bought a while back just because I thought it looked cool that I'd like to paint. Think that'll work?

hmm... looking at it again, I don't think it'd be really representative... there's no way I'd get a 4 in roller on most of the contours of this thing, it's just too tiny. Anyone have an old fender? lol, optmus, if you still had that volvo, I might actually have bought it now that I've got some $ in the bank. income is fun.

here's the pics of the mess:

I thought I used plenty of mineral spirits, it was pretty thin, but it came out pretty bumpy looking. When I try again later on the other side, I'll thin it more.

You'll probably need to mix it at least 50/50 with possibly even more mineral spirits.

Back before WWII, it wasn't uncommon to paint cars with mits (no kidding -- my dad did it once). Not sure what the effect would have been though

I'm going to give this a shot this weekend on my project car. In case anyone was wondering here's a pricelist from Lowes Home Improvement. This is an awesome thread.

Rustoleum $24.57 for all colors (1 gal)
Mineral Spirits $8.42
Foam brush w/ roller (4") $3.47
Foam brush refills (4") (2 pack) @ $3.47 (6 pack) @ $9.32
Flat foam brush (2").57 ea (3").74 (4").82
Roller tray (3 pack) $1.28
"Water" proof sandpaper (5 sheet pack) $2.97 all grits

I'll post before and after pics here or maybe I can get John to post some on the website. I'll also try to get dilution ratios if I remember at the time.

it's rustoleum in a can. the same stuff you used to spray your car I think. the same stuff used in this article, only applied with a roller instead of sprayed:

yes, it was either discussed in thread that was linked, or from a link in that thread. basically tremclad is the canadian name for rustoleum.

"Well I went to http://www.rustoleum.com and they gave me a choice between the U.S. and Canada sites-
so I went Canadian and they list Tremclad, so it is a Rustoleum Canadian product.
Now who knows how this translates down in the U.S. of A.? But I'm sure with some e mails and/ or toll free number research w/ the rustoleum company, this can be determined! "

just search the thread for rustoleum

yeah, I used rustoleum royal red. gorgeous color, somewhere between a light cranberry and the blood red BMW used to put on the M roadster, but I definitely needed more mineral spirits, and I also want to see how much sanding it can help. I didn't get a chance to try that before I skipped town. I thought I poured a lot of mineral spirits in, but come to think of it, it probably wasn't anywhere near 50%. It definitely did lay down more evenly from the bumpy first appearance a ton after a night's drying, and everything I used is in raleigh right now, so I probably won't take another crack at it for another week at least (I'm working in VA), but it definitely needed more mineral spirits, it was still too bumpy by far...

^maybe this was a mistake, but I just used mineral spirits on a paper towel to clean up the enamel... I didn't really pay attention to whether I messed up the garage floor or not... guess I'll know when I get home...
