is this a difficult task? i've only ever had the same one, but the downtime is unacceptable to me.

what info do i have to use in order for stuff to go smoothly?

thanks!

Does this web hosting company control your domain name, also?

sign up for the new hosting company first not using a domain - so they'll give you an ugly address like http://server1.newhost.com/~zip/
mirror your files and DBs - a lot of smaller hosting companies will port your older setup to their system if you give them your login info to the other host.
once you're all set up with the files and DBs on your new server, initiate the domain transfer through them so that way you won't have any downtime with your site.
---------------------
nvm i saw what you wanted. your question is really vague - you'll just need access to the e-mail address on the WHOIS technical record of your registration. nothing else vital.

ah ok, thanks --

sorry about being vague, i don't quite have a full grasp of everything.

but i think i see what you are saying. most companies wouldn't give any sort of refund for unused hosting, right? i suppose that's a silly question.

i'll inquire about the porting to the new setup. that should be fairly simple for them to do?

thanks!

one other question: does my current company OWN my domain name? (since i signed up for it through them?) does that make the transfer even tougher?

if you're talking about prepaid hosting from the host you're switching out of, i doubt it but it can't hurt to ask. if you're talking about if you try out the new company and don't like it, they usually have refund grace periods.

if they say no, then all you have to do is a mySQL dump and FTP the files. then the e-mail addresses and stuff is tedious if you have a lot. see if there's a file somewhere in your root dir (not in your web dir) that has forwarders and vacation responses, etc. - that's how cPanel works I think.

unless you got in on one of those godaddy scam things a long time ago, i don't think so. is it your pixelparlor domain or some other? they don't mind trasnferring the ownership usually - just gotta go through the right channels. the registrar that you are transferring TO has to initiate the request to your old registrar.

i usually like to keep my registrars and my hosts separate. i usually register through ev1servers (formerly rackshack) and then just change my nameservers if i change hosts.

oh crap --

i didn't use godaddy, but i used a very similar company: Lonex (http://www.lonex.com). Hmm... what exactly was the scam? And can't you still get stuff today through GoDaddy? I thought it was legit?

Interesting about keeping registrars and hosts separate, i may try to do that in the future.

The domain in question is pixelparlor.com, yep. I paid $10 I think to have the WHOIS info hidden by my service provider (who's also the registrant).

Try hosting with AIT (Advanced Internet Technologies). They're based out of Fayetteville, NC. Close enough to Raleigh that if there's ever a problem (shouldn't be) that you can just drive on down and annoy the crap outta them.
