what makes a sport a sport?

Sport is a physical activity involving large muscle groups, requiring strategic methods, physical training and mental preparation and whose outcome is determined, within a rules framework, by skill, not chance. Sport occurs in an organized, structured and competitive environment where a winner is declared per the rules and not from subjective evaluations

well racers are often true athletes that spend a lot of time with physical training
but the necessity of that athletic ability is arguable so im not sure

I guess what would make it a sport would be the fact that only the NFL has a higher TV average I don’t know............hmmm.....must not be a sport if it pulls that kind of money........hmmmm.....I am sure it is really physically simple to race in 100 degree weather for 5 hours straight.....Let alone crash....Id take any fucking football bastard tackling my ass over T-boning a wall head on at 190MPH.....eat shit and die stupid fuck

ive been in stock cars, lots of stock car rivers have been fat and out of shape
the new athletic driver image is a new thing

and no, you dont decide if something is a sport based on how many people watch it on tv. lots of people watch american idol, its not a sport.

also, cheerleading is not a sport because it requires judges and subjective judges. that doesn't make it any less athletically demanding and difficult, its just not a sport.

a sport is just a physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

Ive always used 3 criteria to define a sport:
1: must have and use atheletic ability
2: outcome must not be subjective (judges cannot be used to determine a score)
3: some sort of physical defense to prevent the other person/team from scoring

it really doesn't matter what criteria you use. bowling, boxing, and golf all fit the definition of a "sport."

they might be lame sports, but they are sports.

I love people that say golf isnt a sport

Nobody that has ever played real golf (thats without a cart, carrying your own bag), will ever say it isnt a sport. Someone who is unathletic AND out of shape will never be good at golf. You can kinda compensate for one or the other in golf, but not both.

Soneone will probably mention John Daly, but that guy has more athletic ability than a lot of people. So what if he's a tub of lard.

to me, a sport is something that is decided by a definite score (runs, touchdowns, etc). not judgemental wins like cheerleading, dance, etc.

golf and racing would both be sport if this were the case. things like ice-skating and cheerleading wouldn't be sports.

i've dated my share of cheerleaders and heard all the bs about how it's a sport. but hell no, it's not. it's an activity and can be competitive... but it is judged, not necessarily scored.

you could argue what is a sport and what isn't a sport for hours.

you dont have to be in shape to carry a bag
even my fat uncle with a bad knee can play 18 holes without a cart

I can understand all the arguements about what exactly constitutes a sport but i never move on the fact that the winner has to be determined without the help of a judge.

it fits the dictionary definition of sport. you may think it's a lame sport but it fits the definition.

rap is a type of music. some people are like "omg rap isn't music" but it fits the definition of music. they may think it's lame music, but it's still music.

Whats your argument? I have yet to hear a good one in my almost 21 years. 90 percent of them have something to do with riding in a cart....which I agree, makes it seem like less of a sport.

Wow someone feels exactly like I do. Look at Tiger and tell me he wouldn't beat your ass. All of the big dogs like Phil, Ernie, Retief, and Vijay are in good shape and built for the most part.

I dont think you have to be fit

but you have to be athletic. Fit =/= athletic. As a matter of fact, with no relation to golf, one of the most fit guys I know is possibly the most unathletic person i've ever met.
