"Will more users join the TiVo love-in if the hardware's free? TiVo certainly hopes so, and they're pondering the move to no-cost hardware in hopes of attracting a larger customer base. Those who have TiVo seem to love the service, but the company needs more users, and they suspect that the upfront cost of the box is keeping people away. Now, lest this sound like a dubious dotcom business model ("Watch a few ads and we'll give you a free computer!"), keep in mind that TiVo still plans to charge a monthly subscription fee, and that fee may be higher for those who want to pay nothing upfront."

"Still, TiVo's main competition right now appears to be DVRs provided by the cable companies themselves, and these units often come with monthly service fees ranging from US$6-15 per month. If TiVo goes subscription-only for new customers, we expect that their monthly service fee would exceed this cost, owing in part to the fact that existing customers are already paying U$12.95 per month for service on boxes that they paid for."

i'd rather hook up a pc i can control completely.

This sounds like a really good deal. TiVo always seems so much higher quality than TWC's DVR, but I don't want the upfront cost.

^ Is it possible to get a pc that works completely with digital cable? All of the pc solutions I've seen involve using a cable box or only doing regular cable.

jon: they're working on HDTV tuners for PC's that have a cablecard slot on it.. so all you'd need to get digital cable is the cablecard from TWC..

if I hear more about it.. i'll let you know..
