Does anyone know how the progress goes with this endevour? I just got done browsing through the wireless information page in the Computing Resources section of the NCSU website. While informative, it doesn't seem like the information has changed a whole lot since I last saw it.

Could someone explain why it is taking so long expanding our wireless network on campus, and why isn't the expansion happeing faster? Is it a money issue? Does the tech still suck? Are we holding out for better wireless technology to get developed?

Plz don't read this as I'm trying to bitch about it, I just really am curious to know.

Don't feel bad, ECU isn't covered all that well either.

I mean, I'm not angry or disgruntled about it. I just got a laptop w/ wireless recently, so its not like I've been waiting for a while. But I had this impression that we were some sorta school that has a large tech crowd and emphasis. Kinda felt like getting a wireless network up and running would be a priority.

I can understand ECU being slow about it.

my thinkpad always gets perfect signal, but my mac never connected. you can get the key to the private network, but you have to get it "put on your computer" by someone upstairs...

I think it's a little further along than that map indiates.

Really, it's not that bad considering how many radios it takes to cover a big building. The only place I have really had a problem is Harrelson - but that building is like the worst fucking building ever built.

Yeah, I'm a history major and I'd kill to have coverage in my class rooms.

Thank goodness we're gonna be in Withers in the fall. Maybe while they're rennovating, they'll be nice and put in wireless too.

Yea they added nomad wireless to Brooks hall over break, I've counted no less than 8 access points, plus they ran new ports to the ceilings (retarded). But it sure as hell beats the Apple Airport shit we had before.

A dude from CommTech spoke at the student government senate meeting last wednesday. Said they've been doing new coverage at the rate of about a building or two a month and would have complete coverage by 2009 at the current rate. People can vote for which buildings get coverage each month -- the first month they had the vote up there were a few hundred votes, but in the following months about 50 votes each month.

Maybe we could use TWW power to sway this toward some wayward building out of the way?

As an alumni I find the fact that its going to take to 2009 both pathetic and predictable. Heaven forbid a school posing as a top engineering school actually have wireless bathing the entire campus. I mean didn't UNC get full coverage about what... a decade ago?

in short, no.

by "full coverage" do you mean every office and classroom in every building owned by the school has at least 50% reception? 60%? 90%? A line-of-sight to an access point from every chair on campus? Or do you mean every building has an access point in it from some point?

UNC touting their wireless with full coverage is an attempt to mislead prospective students into thinking there's wireless everywhere; which by any cost-effective metric is practically a waste of money. The guy that spoke in front of student senate also was asked how we stack up to UNC.

Our coverage is such that I get a 70%-80% signal in two of my humanities classes (english & sociology), 90% in all of my computer science classes, and a 30% signal in the music hall (of all places), which I placed my vote for.

One thing to note, however, is that NC State meets UNC's connectitivity while doing so with just under HALF the staff.

also, from what i understand, unc has certain buildings covered with wireless and not wired ports because they didn't want to tear up the walls in historic buildings.
