My paper stuck a nice camera in my hands, but I'm just a writer who points and shoots and hopes and prays, so be easy on criticism (and dare I hope constructive?):

Those are a couple I took last week.

We were bored in the photo office, and we found that hat, so we played with the studio lighting and my new 30D. Hillarity ensued. It was hard to keep a straight face with that hat even in the room.

Ronny, that hat reminds me of the one Hines Ward had on at the Steelers Superbowl parade back in February. Heres a picture I took of him:

And speaking of February and Boston, here's some Boston photos I took back in February:

I shot it in raw back when I had a 20D, then underexposed it several stops in post, then boosted shadows to bring BofA and Hearst back out, the Unsharp mask with large radius (hence the slight halo) for overall contrast.

The dynamic range of digital cameras generally isnt good enough to properly expose an entire scene like this, unless you performed the newer HDR feature in CS2 with a swath of multiple images.

ok i reread what flash said... i don't think film has the dynamic range to expose a shot like that either. but cool. i really should start shooting in raw more.

I usually shoot in Raw if the exposure is hard to get dead on, knowing I'd be able to crrect it in photoshop. Usually it is just superfine jpeg though on my 30D (which, might I add, is fucking sweet).

haha, thanks man i have all sorts of shots of random junk that haven't seen the light of day (ie: haven't been properly processed and are waiting in folders), but yah, lots of it is literally garbage, haha.

Im about to buy a 20D and Im prolly gonna buy just the body only.

Lens wise: I want a pretty decent macro lens so I can take good close-ups of random stuff. I was looking at these macro lens:

EF 50mm f/2.5 Macro lens
EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM
EF 100mm f/2.8 USM (pretty expensive)

I also want a lens that can take good landscape pics (not wideangle) and portraits:

EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II
EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 II
EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (also expensive)

These are all canon lenses. If any of yall can suggest some other lenses (sigma/tamron) that are equivalent or lenses that I havent mentioned that you think would be better, that would be great.

^^^^Buy the 60mm 2.8 Macro USM. I just bought one for my 30D and I am super happy with it. Build quality is much better then the compact macro, and I heard it is much sharper.

As far as portraits are concerned, the 60mm is a good portrait length lens, so you won't beat that. For landscapes, you'll want as wide as possible (trust me, you will want the wider lens), so go with the 17-85. Most focal range, and sharper then the others, although none of the 3 zooms you mentioned will even begin to compare to the 60mm.

And yeah, don't go with Nikon.

I have the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM with my EOS 20D, it came as the "kit lens" with my camera. It takes great pictures as far as I'm concerned. I can try to post a few of my wide angle pics that I've taken with it once I get home.

you see all that flat empty space on the ends

get rid of that

think of it like a darkroom
thats like leaving your photo in the chemical bath for a couple moments too long
or not making sure the negative was dry before you put it in the enlarger

regarding the boat pic, i'd still say you could beef up the saturation a touch and also brighten the whites -- that change (to the newer image) got a bit dark, but nice shooting, man
