Yeah, I remember that.

But pee in your eye really is different than pee in your hair.
It looks promising, but ambitious as hell.

Why do I have no want to build all these races and planets that mean nothing to me.

Whats the point other than showing how much time youve wasted building goofy looking civilizations.

its kinda unclear....is this an mmo or not?

No. Players will be indirectly connected. Player A makes a creature, which is loaded into a giant database. The creature that Player A made might show up in Player B's world, though Player A will not be "there."
I heard it described as "massively single player."
Same goes for planets, galaxies, objects, architecture...
Theoretically.

so .... these creatures end up in othere peoples universes?

just the creatures? not their worlds?

I think their worlds can be assimilated, too. I'm not sure how all this works, and I haven't looked up that much about the game. All I know is I desperately want it to work. Can you imagine?

One step at a time. If it was an MMO, then I have to interact with idiots. Don't get me wrong, I play MMOs. I enjoy MMOs. But this seems to transcend MMO. It's artful.
And I'm not sure if that's possible since each Player's game is procedurally generated. If it was an MMO, the overworld would have to be the same, which would involve scripting, which negates the game...
I think. I know zip about computers/game design.

to me, this takes all the best parts of an mmo and puts them in a single player game.

From how I understand it, the game would be different every time you play because the other people playing would be creating different creatures that you would interact with and your creature could be different as well. PLUS, it doesn't seem there is a chat system, which is awesome because most people in mmo's are just annoying. Also, there is no trying to play catch-up like in a traditional mmo. You aren't competing against what level someone else is at specifically, which means if I only play an hour a day, or every other day, I can still enjoy it.

This might be one of the first games I've bought in a while.

I was just looking at some screenshots from http://spore.ea.com/

does anyone think the colors are a little off? I don't know, they seem too bright, exaggerated.

I liked the color, or lack thereof, in the video better.

did anyone play that old lego train game

where you could set up your village

and you could put the mail cart up

and you would get e-mails from random users

and your messages would likewise go out at random

absolutely no control

yeah that's what this is

and yeah

it wasn't fun at all

Procedural means it's generated "on the fly" by algorithms, which means all the textures, behaviors, etc. --basically an enormous amount of player created content--takes up less power and reflect a larger span of possibilities, instead of a few "scripted" outcomes.
That's my understanding of it, anyway.

looks like youtube is down at the moment, but here's a link once it's back up to a video of Robin Williams creating a Spore creature at E3:

Yeah, I watched that at work earlier today. Williams schtick aside, it was pretty cool. I haven't heard enough about this game to know what you're supposed to do with these creatures once you've created them, though.

Edit: Watching the first video posted makes the game seem really cool, while at the same time making Will Wright seem really not cool.

[Edited on May 16, 2006 at 12:36 AM. Reason : This entire post was created procedurally!!!]

Oh, I certainly respect what the man has done for the gaming industry, procedurally. It's just that, procedurally, he seems a little attached to certain words that don't really tell people anything, procedurally.
