Or can I. You haven't specified if it's automatic or manual. How do you know you need a new one?

bttt - my bad its a stick shift.

I was driving on 64 outside of Williamston when it happened. Its in a shop in Plymouth now, and the dude working there said it needed a "new transmission," but the mechanic working on it left for the day, and Im supposed to give him a call in the morning for his price for replacement.
Another Question: should I go ahead & have the clutch replaced as well?

The fucker never called me, I had to call him, so I'm a little hesitant about having him do the actual work. I never thought of having one of you mad scientists do it, but I guess I should have expected the garage had people that have done this before, so I appreciate the offers. I might have to pm one of you guys, depending on what this guy quotes me for $

broken input shaft or crapped out idler shaft bearings? both common problems and easy to fix instead of replacing the whole thing

Or is it the dreaded 5th gear separation/warpage?

Yeah, either gk2004 or myself can do the swap. Repairing the one you have now isn't a bad idea if it's just a bearing issue or the gear problem.

Ok, heres what the guy told me:

The bearing on the input shaft didn't have enough oil and so it seized, sheering the shaft in two. The shaft then went into the clutch, which needed to be replaced anyway b/c it was down to the 'rivets' (?)

That's all kinda german to me, I didn't even know the transmission had oil

The guy quoted me $1400-$1600 to fix it all, if he gets a used transmission. Is this a fair price?

gk2004 and/or zxappeal: can you guys do this kinda thing? and do you have the contacts (or can you direct me to someone) to get a used transmission and/or clutch? price range-ish?

Throw out bearing crapped out breaking the input shaft of the trans. The clutch material is riveted on to the disk. Call around to the local salvage yards and get a price on a transmission,or call any transmission shop to see how much to repair you trans. $ Seems a bit steep to me but I havnt priced any transmissions in a while. You can get a clutch kit at any auto parts store, I recomend Car Quest. By kit I mean Pressure plate, disk and throwout bearing. Get the total of your parts and see where you stand. Dont forget about the tow bill.

Always get a new clutch. Never used. Unless you know the clutch has like less than 10k or 20k miles on it.

I would just start calling around to salvage yards and see what you can get a tranny for.

Ones I would try: Jackson's, Wagner's, Capital Truck Salvage...

There are others, but these are the ones I deal with primarily.

gk's right about tow bill. You're looking at $1.25 to $1.50 a mile...both ways.

I can tow, but you've got to spring for the trailer or tow dolly and the diesel fuel and my time. Will be cheaper than a wrecker/rollback, but a little more hassle.

Figure $75 to $100 an hour for the work. About 4 to R&R a transmission. Now to take it apart and replace components...bank on at least another 3 hours.

For parts? Brand new transmission parts can only be gotten from the dealer, usually, especially for the Aisin Warner trannies that Ford uses in Rangers. They aren't cheap, anyway you slice it. The last things I bought were a Nissan 5th gear for $125 and a Toyota syncro collar for about $35. I'm betting that a new input shaft will be more, as it also has a gear on the end of it.

Bearings usually run about $20 to $60, depending on which one it is and its relative rarity.

Tack onto this any other various charges, like towing, diagnostic time, and various shop supplies and whatnot, and the bill can get right steep.

BTW, I just checked on http://www.car-part.com and prices for those trannies range from $350 to $1000. Depends on the total mileage and condition.

Or swap it out at Car Quest for a reman one. What I've been doing lately. One less trip to make.

Cool didnt know they were doing that.. Couldnt that throw the balance off though. I always have my rotating assemblys balanced with the flywheel and balancer. Prob not enough to make a diffrence. How much do they get for a reman?

Usually on par with having one resurfaced. Really, they do little more than resurface your 'wheel and either spec out or replace the ring gear. They may check balance as well.

If you're really gonna get anal, I suppose it would probably be best to balance separately and then again as an assembly. The last engine we did, we balanced the recip assy, the flywheel, AND the crank pulley/damper together.

Keep in mind you're altering the balance somewhat when having a flywheel resurfaced. Especially if the damn shop takes off 0.030 or so or the thing was warped to begin with. For an engine that probably never sees the high side of 3k rpms, I would think it's probably not that crucial.
