I'm going to assume you're using Windows.

Start -> Run

Type cmd in the 'Run' box

You'll get a command prompt. at the prompt type:

ipconfig -all

It'll spit back several lines of stuff, one of which will be "IP Address".

why are we assuming NAT?

Now that I think about it, I guess it is more common than not, isn't it....

I'm actually having trouble connected to my desktop at home using Remote Desktop from school.

We're located behind a router and we've got a local IP address (which is no good outside of the home). Everywhere I google for my external IP address, I get the WAN IP address of the network (which is the same as all the computers at my home). Does anyone know how I can find the actual external IP address of my pc while it's behind a network w/ a router?

You'll have to use the IP of your modem and foward the ports on your router to the correct internal IP address.

Winner. Also look into setting up a static IP on your local network. First time your power goes out and your local IP address changes, you'll curse yourself.

If you have multiple people with remote desktop, google "Remote Desktop Change Port".
