i've been getting back into shape, and i've been eating a lot of the same foods because they just arent getting old at all to me. first off, i don't really care about losing or gaining weight right now. i'm going to weigh about the same amount regardless (135-140), because my metabolism is the bomb. i'm not trying to gain a bunch of muscle mass, although i am trying to develop lean muscle (gonna go for the bruce lee look). i just want to get some kind of consistent diet where i get everything i need without spending a lot of money. i think this will be beneficial for my health and my bank account.

right now i consume a lot of:
yogurt (protein, vitamins)
cottage cheese (lowfat, LOTS of protein)
bananas (potassium)
orange juice (calcium, vitamins)
bean burritos (protein, carbs, fiber?)
mueslix (fiber, vitamins) + soy milk (protein, vitamins).

trying to figure out if this is a good basic diet to stick to (of course i still drink beer and wine occasionally, and eat unhealthy foods every once in a while when i feel like it).

1) is there anything major missing from my list? ie. i could see how i have a lack of fruits and vegetables...

2) is there something i should take out of my list? btw i'm vegetarian, so that's why there's no meat in the list.

3) also, how should i schedule my intake of the things i eat? i remember reading a post on another thread that you shouldn't skip on breakfast, and that you should actually eat after working out.

some of the most healthy things you can eat are dark green veggies (broccoli, leafy ones like spinach, lettuce, cabbage), things with lots of fiber (whole grain stuff) and brightly colored fruits (like strawberries, blueberries). This is what they taught us in nutrition lecture. Also, certain nuts are healthy in limited quantities. hope this is helpful.

When you do eat carbs try to make sure they are whole grain, complex carbs, so try to avoid white bread/pasta and potatoes (simple carbs).

Eating the whole grain complex carbs (Whole wheat breads and pasta's etc.) will also make you feel fuller longer since they take longer to digest and are loaded with fiber.

Since you are vegitarian, you might want to add some eggs (The egg whites are a perfect protein) into your diet, but try to limit the amount of yellow yolks (loaded with cholesterol), for example if you are going to make scrambled eggs use only 1 egg yolk out of three eggs. If you miss the flavor since the yolk is what gives it's flavor, I cook a slice of fat free american cheese into the eggs.... Damn good stuff right there.

Use real beans (slow cooked dried beans).
Canned refried beans are so processed that they have nearly none of the benefits of whole beans.

You need a raw (not cooked, not canned, not frozen) dark leafy green every day.
(Iceberg lettuce is not dark....)

Nuts: raw and unsalted is best, but some roasted salted is OK, occasionally....

Seeds: (flax, hemp, sunflower, pumpkin) mix them, raw, into your bread dough, pancake batter, burritos, mueslix, etc.

Whey protein powder: good stuff.... every day....

whats up jimmy.

i dont know if you eat fish or not but salmon is good for you and tastes amazing no matter how you cook it.

i always buy the frozen bags of broccoli. its a good deal and it fills you up.

i switched from coffee to green tea and it had a considerable effect on my health.

buy barilla plus pasta. it has omega-3 in it and more protein than average pastas.

Body For Life is an awesome diet. My fiancee got into anazing shape using it. Its actually really similar to the Abs Diet. You really can't go wrong with either. They are more "a sensible eating and exercise plan, not a fad diet."

Of course it is... they just used "Instat" because it worked nicely into their little name and because its easy when at work oron the run (zap a few seconds in the microwave and its ready).
