National ATM Card Breach Affecting Triangle Cardholders

POSTED: 6:41 pm EST March 9, 2006
UPDATED: 7:31 pm EST March 9, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Thousands of Triangle customers will be issued new debit cards after a data security breach involving a national retailer.

And some of them didn't even realize they were victims of the breach until they went to use their debit cards and realized they didn't work.

The breach apparently left Leslie Page with a $794 negative balance in her account.

Page is the victim of a fraud scam that now stretches across the globe -- from North Carolina to California to Spain to Pakistan.

“I had been out of town over the weekend, but not in Pakistan,” Page said.

But someone was using her debit card number in Lahore, Pakistan, to withdraw money. All together, she lost about $900.

Published reports say Visa USA customer account numbers and personal identification numbers were stolen from a major retailer, possibly OfficeMax.

This week, Visa USA notified banks across the nation about the security lapse. The FBI and Secret Service are investigating the case.

Visa said cardholders are not responsible for any fraudulent purchases made with their cards. They are fully protected by the company's zero-liability fraud protection policy."

Fuckers cancelled my RBC Centura card on Saturday with no warning, and from what I've found a few other banks have done the same. Apparently this isn't the usual security breach where they send you a letter and cancel your card a week later. Having your debit card declined and the ATM retain it is not a pleasant experience, especially if you don't have a backup money supply. Just a warning, because the banks are trying to keep this quiet and won't give you one.

I had my card grinded in a ATM last year, it freaked me out. Lukily I had recieved a card the day before, for what I thought was for no reason. The card I had currently was only a couple of months old, so I thought it was out of place for me to get a new one.

^ Something tells me you haven't tried to buy office supplies lately, so you are probably fine.

I know everyone gets redundant calling them "ATM cards." Hell, I do it. But I I wish I could hold headline writers for WRAL to a higher standard.

[Edited on March 10, 2006 at 6:25 PM. Reason : was thinking ATM Machine That's what I get for trying to be cute after a 12 hour day]

^^ That isn't redundant.

PIN number is.

Got my new card in the mail today. It looks significantly uglier than my old one.

I'm an RBC Centura customer, and I haven't had any issues.....

I used my card about 6-7 times last weekend, but haven't used it at all this week.

They said something about it possibly being from people who shopped at OfficeMax?
