Quote : | "MCCAIN IN REPUBLICAN STRAW POLL EMBARRASSMENT Sat Mar 11 2006 12:50:33 ET
Facing a loss at a 2008 straw poll event this weekend, Senator John McCain of Arizona told his supporters to write in President Bush [?] as a sign of support, leaving many sputtering.
"For the next three years, with our country at war, he's our president and the only one who needs our support," McCain told nearly 2,000 party activists from 26 states gathered in Memphis.
McCain, realizing the national political media had descended on the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, moved to discredited the straw poll by asking delegates to vote for Bush, insiders claim.
Instead of stopping the momentum of Majority Leader Bill Frist - widely anticipated to win the straw poll - the move seemed to exposed the McCain camp's insincerity about their position with the base.
One activist said, "McCain voted against all the Bush tax cuts... maybe he should have voted for the president then, instead of waiting for a political stunt to try and distract."

All the major 2008 GOP candidates are at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference this weekend in Memphis. Hotline is conducting a straw poll to determine who the early favorite is.
I'm personally pretty embarassed for McCain. I used to think he was a pretty stand up guy. 3/11/2006 2:42:27 PM |

I like McCain ok but wouldn't vote for the guy. You do realize that he'd be the oldest president ever at the BEGINNING of his term if elected, right? Older than the previous record holder (Reagan) was at the end of his second term.
Sorry man, but I'd like to have someone with a better chance of being sentient at the end of 4 years. 3/11/2006 4:39:17 PM |

We're both wrong. McCain would be older than Reagan when (if) he gets into office (McCain 70, Reagan 69) and would be older than Reagan if he went for two terms. Reagan was 77 when he left office.
He's still too old for my liking. 3/11/2006 7:49:23 PM |

So voting for old as shit farts is now a good idea?
Look - I would have voted for McCain in a heartbeat in 2000, but there's no way in hell that I'm going to vote for a person who has the potential to be the oldest president ever. It's just not a great idea, IMO.
Allen or Warner - either way and things are peachy. I'm actually hoping to split up the government a bit with the 2006/08 elections to get some more balance. 3/11/2006 11:50:01 PM |

Frist's win isn't that much of a surprise; the SRLC is in Memphis, after all. I think the two surprises are the numbers of Tennesseans (43 percent) that didn't vote for him and Mitt Romney's success overall. I'm a little surprised that Allen didn't best Romney considering his own Southern ties.
Quote : | "SRLC Straw Poll: Frist Wins; Romney Second
After five hours of voting and with more than 1,400 ballots cast, The Hotline SRLC Straw Poll has come to a close with a tremendous turnout. Sen. Bill Frist (TN) led the pack with nearly 37% of the vote, followed by MA Gov. Mitt Romney with 14%. Sen. George Allen (VA) was tied for third place with Pres. Bush (10%), despite Bush being a write-in candidate.

Among the 526 voters who made Frist their top choice, Allen was the leading second-place vote getter with 18.4%. He was followed by Romney (12%), ex-NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani (10.8%), John McCain (10.6%), Bush (7.0%) and AR Gov. Mike Huckabee (3.4%). Nearly one in four Frist voters, though, indicated no second-place preference.
With more than a 66% increase in voter turnout from the '98 SRLC straw poll, these results set the stage for the GOP WH battle that lies ahead. Stay tuned to The Hotline and On Call throughout the week for continued results, methodological notes and insider analysis. " |

Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), a renowned heart surgeon before becoming Senate majority leader, went to the floor late Thursday night for the second time in 12 hours to argue that Florida doctors had erred in saying Terri Schiavo is in a "persistent vegetative state."
"I question it based on a review of the video footage which I spent an hour or so looking at last night in my office," he said in a lengthy speech in which he quoted medical texts and standards. "She certainly seems to respond to visual stimuli."
Stephanopoulos: You’re a doctor. Do you think tears and sweat can transmit HIV” Frist: I don’t know…I can tell you.. Stephanopoulos: You don’t know? Frist: I can tell you things like, like..condoms.. Stephanopoulos: … You believe that tears and sweat might be able to transmit aids?
The AP reported that Frist’s AIDS charity, World of Hope, Inc., “paid nearly a half-million dollars in consulting fees to members of his political inner circle.” Larry Noble of the Center for Responsive Politics said, "One of the things people who are running for president try to do is keep their fundraising staff and political people close at hand. And one of the ways you can do that is by putting them in some sort of organization you run." [AP, 12/18/05]
The Securities and Exchange Commission and U.S. Justice Department opened investigations into Frist’s sale of stock in HCA, the health care company founded and managed by the Frist family, just before the stock price plummeted.
