"Miss Deaf Texas struck by train, killed

Tuesday, March 14, 2006; Posted: 9:27 a.m. EST (14:27 GMT)

Tara Rose McAvoy, 18, was walking Monday near railroad tracks when she was struck by a Union Pacific train, authorities said.

A witness told Austin television station KTBC the train sounded its horn right up until the accident occurred.

McAvoy, who had been deaf since birth, won the state title in June and represented the state "with dignity and pride," state pageant director Laura Loeb-Hill told The Associated Press via e-mail Monday night.

McAvoy was to represent Texas at the Miss Deaf America pageant this summer, Loeb-Hill said.

McAvoy graduated last year from the Texas School for the Deaf, attended Austin Community College and then started at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., in January, but had returned to Texas, Loeb-Hill said."

i am sure that being deaf would render your sense of touch useless as well, since she apparently did not feel the vibration of the train on the tracks.

it says she was walking "near" railroad tracks. Maybe she was walking next to the track, too far to feel the vibrations but close enough for the train to clip her

SHE IS FUCKING DEAF.

SHE KNOWS BETTER THAN TO WALK CLOSE TO A TRAIN TRACK AND NOT LOOK IN BOTH DIRECTIONS EVERY SO OFTEN.

SHE KILLED HERSELF OBVIOUSLY.

EITHER WAY, DARWINISM WINS.

I have a profound hearing loss myself and I sure as hell wouldn't be walking near/on the railroad tracks. Even walking on the roads, I'm constantly looking around me in the event I am unable to hear a car horn go off....It's really unfortunate that accidents like these happen.

It was suicide. If you ever stand near train tracks..the entire ground shakes before the trains comes for long enough for anyone to realize.."Hey..either that's an earthquake or a train comming..."

saw a guy almost get hit on the tracks in front of wolfcreek, he was walking in the same direction, i guess it was going so fast that it snuck up on him (he was wearing headphones) but he jumped at the last second. maybe the same thing happened to her>?

Okay, this girl may have pulled off a damn good suicide (as far as allowing for doubt about her true intentions goes).

I would say suicide for sure, but this bit^ makes me second-guess my assumption. Why not take it full on to get the job done for sure? Why take just the side part and risk surviving only to be deaf AND in a wheel chair for the rest of her life?

Oh, she's good...

So she was deaf AND mentally retarded?

Fuck it. I shouldn't judge. We've all been thoughtless before.
