http://www.mahahounds.org
I took over as webmaster of maha [mid atlantic hound assoc.] about.. eh.. a year now
slowly getting it to what I consider an acceptable state, it was kinda sad before it was given to me
(http://web.archive.org/web/20040419085528/http://www.mahahounds.org/index.html)

My biggest question is how slow should I expect MySQL to be?
Gallery2 loads pathetically slow sometimes, but the forum (although empty) usually loads fine
is this an issue with using iframe? I tried making the gallery fit the -right- way, but there were some.. issues with that.. I may try again later, but its up and it works for now

The site is hosted by addr.com, which has been an alright host. It has been up most of the time and they've always been prompt with answers, but its had some slow load times lately.. may consider requesting a host change

Anyways, I'd appreciate suggestions and comments about my site.. its not much, but it works

Thanks!

on a related note, my aspca logo chopped off aspca.org's page is the number one result for google image search aspca

definitely a functional improvement over what you started with.

And Gallery appears fine to me. You can speed it up a bit by reducing the jpeg quality of the thumbnail images and turning on caching.

And yes you REALLY need to get it out of the iframe. Gallery2 is completely templated, so it's really not hard at all to put it in the site template.

nah. I created the site in basically its current form, tweaking along the way.. (gallery2 is the newest addition, the 'made from scratch' version I created wasnt cutting it) I dont devote much time to the site.. I do this for free (somthin to put on my very short resume, and I enjoy it) so unless its urgent (like events and premiums) changes get made slowly

the old site has a few hundred pages I'm converting to my style using a dreamweaver template (which is /very/ helpful) its just finding the useful pages and discarding the old useless pages

eventually, if they'll use it, I'll skin the ipb board, but the club still likes using an email list, its what they are used to, so whatever.. its there if they want it

the odd thing about gallery2 is that when I make a change to the template, it doesnt refresh. I followed the instructions fairly closely.. But if I reinstall I guess it re-reads the template file and updates the page.. so its caching it somewhere? it doesnt matter which computer I use, so its serverside.. google didnt help much when I was trying to fix it, and its a pain to reinstall gallery2 every time I want to tweak the template..

heh. very mature, whoever 'hacked' my ipb [the forum]. yeah, 1.3 final is full of holes but its free.. might migrate to smf, they seem decent

(someone put a page redirect to http://members.lycos.co.uk/alwan6ef/index.html )

apologies if it wasnt a tww guy (or gal) who did it, but it being two days after I posted this topic...

anyways, anyone worked with gallery2 before that might help me?

[Edited on March 16, 2006 at 1:07 AM. Reason : heh. that was actually my fault, left somthin ungaurded]

^^probably got indexed because you posted it here, and script kiddy fuckers just scan for vulnerable installs and crack them quickly. i doubt it was someone on here.

I've used gallery2 and gallery on a few sites. guys it's really not hard to change the templates. they have pretty good documentation and excellent forums to assist

to make the most basic gallery2 integration you only need to change one file - template.tpl. Actually, you should copy an existing theme, change the name and stuff, then start updating the template.tpl. You can just start adding in custom HTML, removing some of the smartytags you don't need, remove some of the HTML they have (like the Gallery headers and icons), maybe add in a reference to your own CSS. e.g. here's one i did recently where the gallery is seamlessly integrated into the site by only changing template.tpl (and customizing some modules too for other functionality)
http://susanbmarlowe.com/gallery2/v/holycow/
Also, I found it useful to add in some extra smarty tags so that the custom theme is only displayed on the photo, album and slideshow pages, so on the Admin page it still uses a Matrix-like theme, making it much easier to update the albums and pictures.

^^ what host are you on? most hosts will have those programs built in, and G2 will autodetect them. Are you having trouble activating the modules, or do the verification tests fail after module activation? Have you installed any of the programs on your own webspace?
