^^Yeah I should have figured. They are telling us that we have until Friday to sign a new lease for the FALL. If not, they will assume we are leaving and rent out our apartment. Is this standard procedure for most of the apartments of this type? I understand they are trying to lock in the customers but my current lease doesn't expire until August. Don't you think 4 1/2 months advance notice is a little excessive?

^ They are owned by a completely different company now, may be the new company policy

yeah you have to give a 30 or 60 day notice if you are gonna move out
i'm pretty sure that's standard procedure everywhere
it has been at every apartment i've ever lived in

Go to student legal services, it sounds like they are trying to jerk you around on the lease.
Also don't assume that just because your lease says it, that's the way it is. Especially when renting in a college town, a lot of companies put shit in their lease that is FLAGRANTLY illegal, I am helping a client with one of those now. They do it because they know students probably wont contact a lawyer about it.
