I have had (diagnosed) ADD my whole life, and have never been able to concentrate well on my work. Even if I literally have nothing else to do, I cannot focus on homework. This has been getting worse over the last few months, I don't know if it is senioritis or my ADD is worse than before, but it is severely affecting my grades.

What does it take to get a legit prescription to Adderall? And is it possible to do it at the student healt center, or would I need to see my family doctor?

If you have a good relationship with your GP, and can bring in medical records (or get them transferred there) with the diagnosis (and preferably, the doctor's notes on your dx), you should be able to get a script from your GP.
I also wouldn't waste your time at the Student Health Center
Btw, I don't suggest going in and asking for adderall, unless your reasoning for asking for it is that you've been on it before, and prefer it. Otherwise, be open to what the doctor suggests...but also don't get herded into taking the newest, "best" ADHD med. Do your research on the meds before you go in.

Be prepared to be re-evaluated for ADHD/ADD.

Who's your insurance provider?

what the hell are you people talking about? it's WAY easier than all that. go to your doctor, tell them what you posted in this thread, and any one worth a damn will give you a prescription. you'll have to go in for one or two followup visits to ensure no side effects, but that's it. if you need a doctor, pm me and i'll give you the name of mine.

Yeah, just go to a primary-care doc.

Let me say this again: THERE ARE NO TESTS THAT CAN DIAGNOSE ADD. It is just a clinical diagnosis.

We use the term "clinical diagnosis" to refer to a diagnosis made directly by the physician based on the history & physical exam; these are for conditions for which further lab tests are unnecessary (or for which there are no valid tests available).

yeah, do you really think everyone and their brother would have a prescription if there were some kind of test?

the test for ADD is as follows: Does this speed make you motivated to get off your ass? YES! ok.

"what the hell are you people talking about? it's WAY easier than all that."

That's the damn truth. My brother got "diagnosed" with ADD because he's had trouble concentrating. He got an Rx for adderall after his first office visit with his new doctor and filling out a questionnaire ("Do you get bored in engineering classes?")

I don't care what they give me as long as it helps. I will probably just go to my GP and see what he can do for me. My insurance is Blue Cross, it is through my Dad, government provided.

Good. I was just trying to point out that being college-aged and asking for a popular drug by name, out of the blue (whether you have ADD or not) tends to raise flags

BCBS: I suggest you stay far, far, far away from Drs Kamdar, Kocsis, Mazzaglia and Conrad

"Psychologists" aren't allowed to prescribe medications. All they could do is refer you to a doctor who can.

Psychiatrists are MDs, meaning they have full prescription-writing capabilities.

psychiatrists are doctors with M.D. degrees that can therefore prescribe medicines

pschologists usually don't have M.D. degrees and do not

and you're the one that said it takes a psychiatrist to prescribe.

It's an inbalance of chemicals in the brain - that not psychological.. thats physical.

Think about the people you know who are psychology majors

and ask yourself if a single one of them would ever be allowed to prescribe anything to anybody.

Or to fucking dogs, for that matter.

^^

yeah, i know what i said

i would think that a regular doctor "shouldn't" be able to prescribe those meds

apparently, i was mistaken

but it's still clear that you don't know jack about what you're talking about

you know why, cause NO ONE REALLY DOES

that's why psychiatry comes off as awfully hokie sometimes

but anything that involves the mind is basically thought of as in the sphere of psychology

I am sick of this "adult ADD" and Adderall bullshit.

WE ALL HAVE ADHD. SOME OF US ARE SMART ENOUGH TO DEVELOP COPING SKILLS.

Quote :
"being lazy is not ADD"

Quote :
"Doctors don't know that"

A lot of them really don't. Some of them are old ass dudes who haven't read a medical journal in ages and jump at the chance to prescribe a "new" drug. And some of them know full well that they're diagnosing it too much, but hey, they're getting paid! Why should we care?

THIS IS TOTAL FUCKING BULLSHIT!

I'm sorry. I'm just upset because I know that any stimulant would improve my school performance, but I'm not going to be a bitch to the pharming industry. And I don't give a fuck about my grades or competition, but I know some kids do, and they have to compete with jacked, twittering retards who supposedly have trouble focusing and can't figure out how to remember important due dates. WRITE IT DOWN. MAKE A FUCKING TO-DO LIST, YOU FUCKING MORONS.

I am studying to be a teacher. I'm definitely going to need to learn more about the science behind ADD/ADHD before I get a job because I obviously have a HUGE bias that I'm gonna need to overcome.

Damn woman, what is your problem? So you don't like people with ADD, whatever, I don't like people with cancer.

Maybe you can simply "WRITE IT DOWN. MAKE A FUCKING TO-DO LIST, YOU FUCKING MORONS." and everything is alright. I can't, and I am sorry if that upsets you. A to-do list helps me remember due dates, which I don't have a problem with anyway. I have a problem with focusing.

But maybe you are right, and everyone's mind works the exact same way. I guess you are just more dedicated and smarter than I am. Too bad. Luckily there is a pill to help me and my weakness.

Sorry that upsets you so...

I agree with everything BridgetSPK and hempster have said.

The whole ADD thing is just an excuse for misbehaving kids or those who can't study. I'm sure that drugs do calm people down and help them to concentrate but I never have believed in the whole ADD thing. Especially in younger kids its just an excuse for crappy parenting and not disciplining your child.

And, oh yeah, I did have a backpedal quote in my original post:

Quote :

I would like to point out that you cannot always trust your family doctor about ADD/ADHD. They're not experts. Furthermore, doctors do benefit from getting you on medications.

umm no.

its not like it shows up on any real tests.

so is stupidity a medical condition? is being shy a medical condition? Is being an asshole a medical condition?

ANYONE can be "diagnosed" with ADD if they wanted.
