Quote :
"DURHAM - Add Duke's Mike Krzyzewski to the list of coaches rising to defend Herb Sendek from N.C. State's restless fans.

On Saturday in Dallas, Texas coach Rick Barnes said Sendek, a former Barnes assistant, isn't properly appreciated at N.C. State, where some fans want him fired despite five straight NCAA tournament bids.

Krzyzewski complimented Sendek on Monday during a news conference scheduled to discuss Duke's Atlanta Regional semifinal meeting with Louisiana State.

"He's really one of the terrific coaches in our country," Krzyzewski said. "He's a proven winner. It makes me appreciate what we have at Duke with the support we've had."

Some Duke boosters were ready to run Krzyzewski out of town in 1983 after the Blue Devils went a combined 21-34 in his second and third seasons. Krzyzewski remains bitter with some of those Iron Dukes boosters to this day after three NCAA titles and 10 Final Four trips.

"There are still some (Iron Dukes) I would never talk to," Krzyzewski said. " ... But I'll always talk to my president and my administrators, because they didn't flinch. Hopefully (N.C. State's) people won't flinch, either."

Krzyzewski acknowledged that some N.C. State fans will say he is sticking up for Sendek because Duke has regularly defeated the Wolfpack. Duke is 23-3 against N.C. State under Sendek since he became coach in 1996-97.

"For those people, go write a letter and complain about me, then," Krzyzewski said. "Because I am going to say something good about a good guy and a really good coach."

Sendek is 191-132 in 10 seasons with the Wolfpack. N.C. State was 22-10 this season and was eliminated from the NCAA tournament in the second round by Texas on Sunday.

"We had, I think, four outstanding teams in our conference, and I think that's State included," Krzyzewski said. "State had some problems at the end of the year when they were hurt and injured and whatever. I mean, they beat (George Washington) by (21). They were really good."

Why should we listen to K about this? It's like listening to Roy. They have their best interests in mind.

I read it the same way. I was merely saying that the Herb Haters have voiced their opinion loud enough that even Coach K knows about it

yeah I could hear Coach K saying "NC State should keep Herb Sendek. He is a great coach. And I know exactly how to kick his ass every year"

^ I know the feeling. I stopped going to football games b/c I couldn't stand the fans booing Amato or Jay Davis or Marcus Stone

he just didn't like being called out as a bad fan.

^yes but if you give a program $$ i'm pretty sure that means you support the program, therefore you are a fan.

are you going to give money to a program that you do not support?

no.

you lose.

I didn't say that it made him a good fan but calling him a bad fan after he has given X amount of money is just stupid.

you're too thick to reason with

you can support a program financially without supporting it in spirit

i.e. ragging the program any time you feel like we've slipped even the smallest bit

Coach K just wants him to stay so he can continue to kick his ass. Makes perfect sense to me. And this whole notion of being a "bad fan" or "good fan" is bullshit to me. Everyone is entitled to express their opinion. If you don't like something then you don't like it.

It's not exclusive to sports at all -- spending money reveals what your true preferences are. This is a basic tenant of economic analysis. People speak a lot of bullshit about what they support, but when they are asked to sacrifice anything for it, they show their true colors.

What a surprise. Of course Coach K would support a coach that he has beaten like a red-headed step child for 10 years. He remembers that it was harder to play State when we had a real coach (i.e. V) and knows that having only one rival makes life easier (i.e. UNC).

Is anyone really shocked by this or think that this is some kind testament to Herb's coaching abilities? If so, get your head checked, you may have a problem.

yes, giving money to a program pretty much excludes him from the "fan" group. it makes him a true fan, rather than a "fan"

whatever

maybe this excludes him from being called a pseudo-"fan"

but to say that his fan status is any different than anyone elses just cause he contributes money is dumb.

what if someone is poor as shit, can't afford to give part of their paycheck to the WPC, they could also be excluded from this pseduo-"fan"dom if they are diehard
