only in places too far away to park. that is, too far away from your classes. I overpay like crazy ($350/semester) for ValPark since I commute from Durham, and the walk from there to Tompkins when its cold is muderous. Especially walking past those litle UT shit heads. 3/20/2006 11:15:45 PM |

ValPark is never recommended.
First round of parking permits is offered in July. If you're abroad or out of town, you must check your NCSU email regularly to make sure you recieve the notification and pay before you forfeit your "space".
If you don't get a permit, there are lots of park and rides you can use, as well as free on-street parking near many off-campus Wolfline stops. There's no reason to pay $700/school year for parking at NC State. 3/21/2006 7:12:47 AM |

They will email you far ahead of time. Just make sure you remember to sign up for one when you register for classes. 3/21/2006 10:28:43 AM |

since they are converting the centennial park & ride lots into permit lots parking is just going to get worse... and the on street parking will become even more scarce... so for next year you'll have to weigh whether it's worth the hassle... or whether their ridiculous $350/sem parking will just save you a lot of headaches, missed classes, etc. There is no doubt the price is ridiculous, but such a limited supply of prime parking and such a high demand for having the right to park there... it's ridiculous but the economics of the situation make it all possible. 3/21/2006 12:55:12 PM |

i had Valpark all 4 years i was at state I can't believe how much the price increased since then, but I always liked the fact that all I had to do was pull into my numbered space - it saved me a lot of hassle...but my classes werent all the way on the other side of campus either... 3/21/2006 3:20:18 PM |

There will be 1 park and ride next year. The one over at the Stadium, granted there are a shitload of spaces over there. Kmart is gone and has been gone for a little while and Centennial will be permit spaces.
And dont forget that you can ride any CAT / TTA bus for free by just showing your student ID

Considering the fact that I pay out-of-state tuition, I ought to get a VIP spot on campus. The only time I got a campus parking permit was when I had summer school and I got it from a friend for ridiculously cheap. Otherwise I think it's insane what some people pay for a spot. There's tons of free parking around State, you just have to know where to look. 3/21/2006 3:45:04 PM |

I looked into valpark (the area by UT right?), and they offered me a spot in the grass/dirt area in someone’s back yard with a bunch of beat up cars that seem to have been vandalized. That combined with the ridiculous price made me turn them done. Luckily I had something better come along. 3/21/2006 4:30:57 PM |

Be glad that for once, they charge staff more than they do students, for the exact same thing. Students don't pay much less, but at least transportation doesn't have this backwards.
Staff: DC/DD: $258 E: $240 F: $174
Student: DC/DD: $245 E: $223 F: $158
Question: C permits are available to grad students, and to permanent employees. I'm guessing any C permits that go to grad students go to ones with TA positions or other campus jobs like that. Is this so? If I get my employee status changed to permanent, would I try to get a C permit through TRACS like all the other students, or through work? 3/21/2006 4:54:25 PM |

you would get it through work. your department can provide you with something to take over to transportation. 3/21/2006 5:08:43 PM |

you only get a C permit as a grad student if you are a grad student at the Vet School. To get a permit as an employee you have to be full time.3/21/2006 5:57:29 PM |

I don't know about a riot... but I'd be very pleased if they create another park and ride on Centennial instead of destroying the one there putting in a pay lot or most likely coverting it to "E" (which to my understanding is what they'll do). Their reason when I asked? "It's not fair for all students for those on Centennial to have parking so close to the buildings they have classes." -- So they turn a lot being used into one that will far less be used next year... or the year after next... or later? If they charge parking "fees" we get to keep only 10% which doesn't even cover overhead. Yeah, it's a rip-off in the name of being fair to everyone, and doesn't help anyone but Transportation in collecting more money from us. Sad...3/22/2006 4:38:12 AM |

In my 4 years at State, I parked at the Coliseum Deck 3 of the 4 years, and had an E permit (or whatever they are calling the West lot now) my first year. I don't know why you people bitch about NCSU transportation... you just have to know how to work the system, or take advantage of permits that aren't paid for. 3/22/2006 12:29:44 PM |

Just park in the 2-hour parking and pay the $12 fine. In the longer run, it'll end up being cheaper than buying a permit 3/22/2006 9:26:18 PM |
