Good chance I will be switchin service providers and wanted to get opinions on carriers. Also can I get a student discount at Verizon like I did at Cingular? And hows the service? Thinking about getting a Treo 650 so if you have that and like/dislike... let me know.

Try this site: https://b2b.verizonwireless.com/tbmb/rylEnterEmailAddress.do

I don't know what you'll have to do to get the discount, but it says that ncsu.edu e-mail addresses qualify for an employer discount. I guess it depends on what they look at as to whether you can get it or not.

If you want a Treo, get the 700w if you can afford it (thou it looks like the $100 rebate thay had at launch is gone now).

Had Verizon for years, hate them with every fiber of my being. But my parents pay for it, so not like I have a choice.

I love Verizon. They called me when they saw that my usage wasn't up at the level of my plan and saved me about 40 bucks a month between a reduced plan and alternative packages for txt, web, etc.

just remember, if you like ringtones and neat little stuff like that, verizon blocks out anything except for their own vcast and get it now

I use an Audiovox XV6600 Pocket PC wih Verizon, so it doesn't matter--I just download any WAV or MP3 and it's a ringtone.

My buddy switched from Cingular to Verizon a few months ago, and he says the reception is WAY better. I switched to Verizon from Sprint three years ago and haven't looked back. Cingular's reception might get better once they complete the merger with AT&T though. By the way, ringtones are corny.

I switched from Nextel to Verizon in January and I love it. The service is so much better and I've yet to have a dropped call that has been my fault.

Isn’t Cingular also AT&T & bell south and maybe more? Enough merging of companies/continued growth combined with decent policies/rates for talking with others who use the same company could lead Cingular to be better in the future.

I like Verizon. Their coverage in rural areas seems to be the best. If you go with them let me get a referral bonus.

you might consider the Treo 700w since you're switching to Verizon

Cingular is a product of At&T and BellSouth (60/40 split). AT&T Wireless and Cingular merged in 2004 - It'll be 2 years in October. While that move made Cingular the largest mobile provider in terms of customers, Verizon has steadily hacked at that lead - in Q2 and Q3 last year that set industry records for gross adds of ~1.9 million per quarter. Cingular's churn rate has been much higher, especially with those transitioned from AT&T in the merger.

I have worked for Verizon Wireless in the past as a strategy consultant and am now starting work as a consultant for a company that does strategy analysis for the entire mobile telecom industry. I personally believe that the time for Cingular to capture added value from the merger is coming to a close. Furthermore, AT&T has announced that they will be removing the brand name Cingular from their services, a move which some in the industry believe could have a negative effect on customer relations (especially in light of the problems they've had since the merger).

The decision was originally made when sbc bought att, bell south objected and it was reversed. now att (formerly sbc) is buying bell south, it's back on.

Verizon is horrible
they make you renew your contract everytime you change your rate plan
their phones are expensive unless you want entry level CRAP
their service is expensive
their customer service sucks (Cingular's isnt great but its getting better)
despite what everyone is led to believe, they have just as many dead spots as everyone else

im happy as hell i switched to Cingular

[Edited on March 22, 2006 at 8:06 PM. Reason : fuck Verizon]

by the way you guys have the merger between Cingular and AT&T all wrong

SBC and Bell South "were" the parent companies of Cingular. SBC bought Bell South and then Cingular Wireless (not SBC) bought AT&T Wireless. Now, AT&T Inc. and SBC have merged and Cingular will eventually be rebranded AT&T.

Cingular is a product of At&T and BellSouth (60/40 split)

Cingular is a product of Bell South and SBC

Suck my dick, bitch. The only thing I can figure is that you're talking about the past and have no clue about what's going on in the current industry. I, however get paid very well to know what the CURRENT state is.

http://news.com.com/2100-1033-238848.html

sorry, but your information is a tad bit outdated, not your fault, Cingular just doesn't update their site. But what i said is still correct.

A leader in mobile voice and data communications, Cingular is the only U.S. wireless carrier to offer Rollover, the wireless plan that lets customers keep their unused monthly minutes. Cingular has launched the world's first commercial deployment of wireless services using Enhanced Data for Global Evolution (EDGE) technology. Cingular provides cellular/PCS service in 43 of the top 50 markets nationwide, and provides corporate e-mail and other advanced data services through its GPRS, EDGE and Mobitex packet data networks. wait, so you're quoting news that is from 2000 and 2003?

and go read my post...I'm telling you what it is now, you're telling me what it was 3 to 6 years ago.

we're both right. you're right about what it was when it was founded, I'm right about what it is today

i never said you were wrong about what is currently, but i quoted you on saying that Cingular is a product of At&T and BellSouth.

that is only correct because SBC and AT&T merged within the last month

[Edited on March 22, 2006 at 8:47 PM. Reason : product meaning it was produced by is from SBC and Bellsouth]

Verizon is great. I couldn't stand Cingular when I had their service. I actually like my cellphone now with Verizon. Doesn't get thrown around at all like the stupid Nokia one I had with Cingular.

And since I work for DuPont, I get an employee discount . What's this I hear about a potential student discount? Any information?
