I'm looking for someone to adopt my 9 month old basset hound "Winston". He is a pure blood basset and has been registered (I just don't remember with who, but I think it was ADA). He is up to date on all of his shots and he was neutered about 3 months ago. I have recently moved to Hawaii and planned on bringing him with me, but my living arrangments here will not allow for it. Right now he is living with one of my friends in Raleigh, but he doesn't have the time or funds to take care of Winston and his dog as well.

What I want in a potential owner:
Preferably a family with kids or someone with roommates/other pets or plenty of time to care for him. I kept him in my apartment, but it was a hassle and I would suggest that he have a fenced in backyard and a dog door. You must be a very patient person since he is still a puppy and is prone to get himself into trouble.

About Bassets in general:
As you may or may not know, basset hounds require a lot of attention. They need to have their ears cleaned at least twice a month, be bathed once a week (especially if you keep them inside)and need their toenails trimmed at least once a month. They tend to whine or howl a lot which can make neighbors angry and can seem very hard headed or slow at learning. On the upside they are incredibly loyal, very friendly, very smart, and very affectionate. They typically don't have a very active lifestyle which makes them good lap dogs. They can get all the excersize they need running around the house or backyard.

About Winston:
I got Winston from a pet store in Cary (The Pet Pad) in September. Typically, getting a dog from a pet store is a bad idea which I didn't find out until I read it later. I think Winston is an exeption to this. He is a very good looking dog with excellent markings, and a good form. He is very affectionate and he loves to be around people. He does extremely well with other animals (he was raised with two cats) and loves to play with all dogs. In general, he just likes to be around animate objects. He responds well to his name and comes when he is called. I have taught him to sit, lie down, and bow. He understands "outside", "treat", and "drop it". He does not howl at all but he is a whiner. The biggest problem with him is that he is not completely house trained which can be very frustrating. He knows that he is supposed to go outside to use the bathroom, but he doesn't always alert you when he wants to. That's why I suggest a dog door and a fenced in back yard. I guess that's about it for him. I have all his records, history, and vet info which I will give to you.

If they cannot take him into the org. they can at least list him as a referral. Sad that you cannot keep your dog. Poor baby! I love bassets.

I *love* Bassetts. My family had one when I was growing up and it was incredibly loyal and friendly. Ears drug the ground and everything. I would *so* take you up on this but my apt. won't allow dows and I'm moving to another state in a few months so it's just bad timing.
