Ok, I've only been here going on 2 semesters now and already I am fed up with this. Can someone PLEASE explain why the Technician people continually put inserts into the paper?

Are we blind or something? Because I notice a pattern here: (1) technician decides to put an insert in the paper on "x" day (2) massive littering occurs on said day

So, dear Technician, please cease using notebook-size paper inserts in the future. Instead, I propose that it would be cheaper just to print an additional page built into the Technician itself. You could even use it as an excuse to sell more ads. 1 extra page isn't going to kill anyone and it might stop the friggin littering problem.

i reaed the first line and addressed the obvious

and why place ads in the paper when you obviously notice the insert?

[Edited on March 30, 2006 at 1:39 PM. Reason : no one reads the ads in the Technician]

^ i'm merely stating that more than likely nobody reads the inserts either. they ALL end up on the ground (as is VERY evident on "Insert Days")

^I may notice the insert, but the first thing I do when I see it is throw it away without even looking at it.

It's always a $$$ thing -- even if the paper took your advice and just made another page for ads, they could then go "well we could get even more $texas by still doing the inserts"

write the paper and tell them you will stop reading if they don't stop the inserts, that's pretty much the only real recourse readers would have

with all the things wrong with the technicial, an occasional insert is the least of their worries.

stop printing the technician, period. they continually get people's names and stories wrong, have crappy pictures, and the majority of people only get it for the crossword. and yeah, those damn inserts are annoying and do cause extra litter.

Nobody forces you to read it. It's not like you are paying for it either

b_radd, you have one of three options:
1) Start up an organization/campaign at NCSU encouraging people not to litter.
2) Go work for the Technician for free. I'm sure you ideas, contributions and hard work will be appreciated by their staff. I'm sure they would love you if you could introduce good ideas for raising revenue, including finding a substitute source of income for the flier inserts.
3) Quit complaining. If one of the fliers begins to attack you, sue the Technician.

Ima write a piece about the insert litter.

Then I'm going to insert grammatical errors.

Then it'll be printed in the paper.

SO THERE.

I feel sorry for the janitorial staff. College students are some of the lowest forms of humanity, leaving their trash in every classroom for someone else to pick up, repeatedly, day after day. Pathetic.

I think university maintenance and facilities should bill the advertisers for the clean up associated with the little. It would make me laugh.

Look ma, I can generalize and sterotype too!

Does anybody have a sensible solution that would help with the littering problem?

"I am most grateful for [the forum letter in the March 29 issue] regarding the inserts that seem to blow all over campus. Our facilities staff resources used toward picking inserts up could otherwise be redeployed toward more positive efforts geared toward sprucing up the campus.

But, I also realize that a key source of revenue that allows the Technician to thrive stems from the insert advertisements. I just wonder if there was a way that we could avoid the mess and time spent by staff cleaning it up. NC State is blessed with the most talented young minds in the state in our student body. I wonder if someone, when challenged, might come up with an idea that would solve the liter problem without hurting the finances of our school newspaper. I am looking for good ideas. Please email them to http://www.ncsu.edu/facilities/ivoclinks/feedback.htm and use the title "Insert Trash"

i used to remove the insert and stick it back in the paper box

usually, this can be done in one move by unfolding the paper as you remove the paper from the box

the fact that we actually use paper at all to print the Technician on is baffling

technicianonline.com works very well
