cingular has been alright to me, but many people seem not to like it. as long as verizon has been good to you, then stay with what you know. if its been bad, then atleast a switch to a different group has a potential of being good, and if its bad then atleast you're no worse off. how has verizon been?

cingular is the cheapest, most minutes, and best signal of any of the cell phone carriers

^What?

Sure they're cheap, and I have more minutes than I will ever use, but their signal and availability leaves a LOT to be desired.

I have at least two or three areas I frequent that I have NO coverage. And that's just not cool.

But I have a package deal through Bellsouth.

it is getting bigger... its now a merge of cingular, bell south, and AT&T I think. Hopefully that will mean good things for calling other cingular customers as it expands.

Cingular has the worst rural coverage of any provider. They have the best urban coverage.

And they are cheaper if ALL you use is voice. Everything else is a rediculous upsell. Data services, txt messaging etc, all make Cingular end up being considerably more expensive than verizon.

You must not get out of town very often.

Every time I go just north of Oxford, or around Lake Gaston, or to the Outer Banks, or to Oriental, I get zilch...nada...zip...no-goddam-fucking-bars.

All it takes is one look at the Cingular coverage map and compare it to Verzion's or Alltel or Sprint.

Even Cingular will tell you they offer almost zero reception between the mississippi river and the california coast.

And with Verizon you can get unlimited V-Cast (video, web et al) for $15.00 a month

^yea, their PDA/PocketPC phones have different data packages (I think that's 44 bucks a month), but that's not really the same thing.

The thing I hate worse than the lack of phone selection is how badly they cripple the phones. I've spent almost two days researching how to re-enable the base features on my Razr, just to be able to transfer files to and from my PC over USB.

and by the way, if you don't get signal you can't make a call for it to get dropped later on...

^ agreed

also i agree with Amsterdam718 by saying "go with Sprint". you really wont be sorry. their Fair & Flexible plans have FREE roaming which means with Sprint's roam contract with Verizon, you roam on all of Verizon's towers if Sprint's not available.

Personaly I'm happy with suncom. I know a lot of people seem to dislike them, but from the research I did into it, the only people that ever had any major problems with suncom were ex ATT people. 2 lines, 600 minutes, nights and weekends mobile to mobile for $65 even. I'm much happier with their coverage and their service than I was with verizon.

Testdrive and see...a lot of people try to make the decision of whether or not to go with a company based on coverage maps and all this other stuff that's on paper. That's cool if everything was ideal and we lived in SimCity, but truth of the matter is coverage and signal reception is based a lot on your handset as well as obstructions that aren't going to be shown on a map.

cingular used to suck ass with dropped calls. but over the last couple years they have gotten MUCH better, I've only had 1 dropped call that i can remember inthe last year or so. great improvement.

i've been with cingular for the past year and a half, haven't had a problem, granted, my reception sucks ass in some places that my friend with verizon gets perfect reception in, but it's never enough of a loss to make me consider getting rid of the service.

I have Cingular and sometimes I dont get text messages from people until the next day (one specific instance was a couple days ago, it took 8 hours for me to get it) and recently I haven't been getting missed calls. I will hear the next day from someone that they called and they will give me a time and I will never have gotten it. More frequently than that, I'll be getting service (or at least I THINK I am) and someone will call but it will go straight to voice mail without ringing and i will only find out that I got a call when my phone beeps and flashes at me from their voice mail.

Cingular is pretty decent. I dont have any problems getting a signal except way out in the middle of bumfuck in my hometown but that's only in spots way far out. I had problems with my bill for several months but it looks like it's straightened out at first. The first time they gave me credit but just put the charges back on the next month. The service itself is pretty good. But customer service sucks.

^^ i've had no problems with Cingular's customer service.. i had a wierd plan problem that didn't include the m2m.. and the dude switched it and even put a note to check my account the day of the switch(at the beginning of the next bill cycle) to make sure it's setup correctly... another call to fix a voicemail deposit issue..

From what I've been hearing.. Cingular is starting to rival Verizon in coverage. From what I can tell in terms of overall service of the 3 major carriers.. Verizon tops, then Cingular, then Sprint/Nextel (I get 5 bars all over Raleigh)

I was a Verizon customer for a long time and felt the same way you do... So I tried Cingular and ended up HATING it (not nearly as good service- less service areas and the areas with service were not as strong. also the phone selection was slimmer and I tried several different Cingular stores for that.)

Fortunately they have a 30 day grace period so I was about to get out of it and went crawling back to Verizon

I suggest you stay.

A lot of people make blanket statements about one carrier's coverage being good or bad - but a lot of the coverage has to do with what phone you're using, not just the carrier. If you're going to use Cingular, get a quad-band phone and do some research on it instead of just getting the cheapest phone available.

Its easy for Cingular to claim the fewest dropped calls....

You can't drop a call if you can't make it in the first place because you have no bars

The reason verizon's data package is $44 a month is due to EV-DO which is just as fast as a Wifi connection. I didn't believe it until I saw it in person.
