I haven't played too many courses, but the best one I played was at Roaring Gap country club in Alleghany county. It was designed by the guy who did Pinehurst #2, and is a pretty short course, but it's hard. Its completely private, so you normally have to be a member at the club ($texas per year) to play. I was an employee there however, so I got to play for free whenever as long as there werent many members on it
The 17th hole is particularly sweet. Its a great scenic overlook. Sometimes we would just stand on the green and hit balls into Wilkes county.
Donald Ross Society likes it too. http://www.donaldrosssociety.org/MEMBERS/Featured%20Course%20Roaring%20GapNC.htm 3/30/2006 8:06:22 PM |

Played there this past September. Its like $400 to have a llama caddy. I love that course.
I have played a bunch of courses, but to be honest none of them are really much better than Old North State. Rock Barn is also one of my personal favorites.3/30/2006 8:38:55 PM |

I love Oakwoods Country Club in Wilkesboro, NC. It's where I learned to play.
I also love the courses around Wilmington, NC. My favorite so far is Echo Farms. I hope to play Magnolia Greens and Castle Bay soon....
Probably one of the toughest courses I've ever played was Cedar Rock Country Club near Lenoir, NC. The par 3's were par 4 length. It felt like a John Daly/Tiger Woods course, made for long-ballers. 3/31/2006 12:38:16 AM |

The Pit was pretty nice to me for the price ($34)
I played the Legacy in Aberdeen designed by Jack's Nickalus' son over Spring Break, though it did not live up to the hype and the $70 price they were charging.
Another really great course for the money is Lockwood Folly down in Supply, NC near Holden Beach. You can usually play there during the summer for less that $40.
I liked the Neuse in Clayton as well. 3/31/2006 12:40:12 AM |
