The flowers only blossom for about one week a year. The first day of the week starts this weekend at the Washington Monument.
Anyone wanting something different to do this weekend should travel up to DC for the day. 3/31/2006 9:31:04 AM |

I remember singing a "Cherry Blooms" song in the 4th grade (Farmington Woods, Holla). Then we listened to the song in its original Japanese lyrics. I distinctly remember hearing "Sakura" in the words.

um actually the blossoms have been open for about 4 days, with PEAK bloom starting yesterday into today
and PEAK bloom lasts for [b[10[/b] days not 7....so you could see it this weekend or next....although this weekend will be the better weekend

Quote : | "The Blooming Period is defined as the period that starts when 20% of the blossoms are open and ends when the petals fall and the leaves appear. The Blooming period starts several days before the Peak Bloom Date and can last as long as 14 days; however, frost or high temperatures combined with wind and/or rain can shorten this period.
During the Blooming Period, the National Park Service conducts annual Cherry Tree walks and bike tours around the Tidal Basin. These Park Ranger conducted programs present an interpretive look at the historical and cultural influence of the Japanese Flowering Cherry Trees in our Nation's Capital. For information on the dates and times of the walks and bike tours please call (202) 426-6841 or see the downloadable brochures on the bottom of the main NACC cherry page

Why did you put sakura in between the cherry and blossoms? sakura mean cherry blossom, so your title reads cherry cherry blossom blossoms 3/31/2006 9:14:25 PM |

it looks better in person. its the amount of cars idling next to the trees and the fact that the population of DC seems to do nothing other than drive/walk through the cherry blossoms for a week that makes the above true.4/2/2006 12:03:27 AM |

Those are mostly tourist. There are cherry trees everywhere around DC no need to go to the tidal basin to see them. Hell, the street right next to me is lined with blooming cherry trees. But yeah, there prettier in person.4/2/2006 1:13:32 AM |

if you're going to go, next week is best. i just got back from dc (being there for the blossoms was totally coincidental). both the parade and sakura matsuri festival are next weekend. see http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/artsandliving/seasonal/cherryblossom/06/gr/washingtonpost-cherry_blossoms_2006.pdf
