I've been working on it a while too, and the remaining time tomorrow just doesn't seem like it will be enough either. If things were more clearly defined and less up to the student, it might be a slightly easier. Trying to determine if things on the message board are relevant to your implementation can be a bit tricky too. Good luck, nonetheless. 4/4/2006 3:42:29 AM |

I lost a lot of time on this b/c Kevin's explanation of how to compile and run the programs wouldn't work for my computer. I was only about to get it to run yesterday about this time, and luckily the code I'd written worked. But it's still not good to have TA's who can't help the students. 4/4/2006 2:21:49 PM |

on the contrary, i think kevin has done a good job, poor kid, there are like 450 posts on the messege board, i think there should be more than one TA helping out on this project. 4/4/2006 3:34:19 PM |

I agree, Kevin has been on top of the MB. He was posting at 5am and back at it again around 9. Another TA would be a lot more beneficial, to us and him. Even though like tjhawkin says, Kevin's explanations of the different IDE's could be more indepth. I had some trouble with NetBeans and he was able to help by referencing another program, but took me a while to figure out what needed to be changed. The new version is quite different from the one I used in 216.
I'm sure office hours are hell because there's only one TA.

Just in case you wondering, there are 4 TA's for this class. And I know Kevin has been doing a great job, but it really would have helped to have someone knowledgable how to use other systems than Linux only. Also don't bother asking Lester for any help, he actually doesn't know Java, that's why there isn't any covered in the lectures. I had to go to Dan Longo, 116 instructor, to figure out how to run after compiling.
The point I was trying to make about Kevin is, if someone says they have a problem, don't continue to give the same answer repeatedly and say, this should work. Find out what will work! Part of his job is to find an answer for you. He just can't keep telling you to repeat a process that didn't work for you. 4/4/2006 6:18:26 PM |

If you're doing java and not using eclipse, you're not being smart. Eclipse will practically give you a handjob.
What was the program? 4/4/2006 6:34:51 PM |

An Adaptable Priority Queue for an Auction program. The APQ manages a maxHeap which manages an array-based binary tree. The bids for the auction contain a name, and a BigDecimal value. The bids have to be location aware. All of it is implemented from a modified net.datastructures interface. The specifications and expectations weren't real clear on a lot of things, which caused a lot of problems. One TA and 500+ posts on the project's message board. I have a feeling a lot of us didn't get done and will turn it in late tomorrow. 4/5/2006 12:36:01 AM |
