I just moved into an apartment with wireless internet in the complex, but the connection isn't that great. It ic consistantly at 5.5mbps on a good day. Is there anything worth while to buy that will make the connection better or some way ot improve it?

Well, if you're only using the wireless network for Internet access, odds are that your throughput on the Internet connection is well below 5.5 Mbps anyway, probably something like 3 Mbps at best. Unless you're interested in actually making use of the local network at speeds faster than that, it's not a problem worth solving, to be honest with you.

that's be a great idea if it weren't supposed to be included in the cost of living in my apartment and I weren't in college and making real money

Demand a new AP near your building.
Repeat as necessary.
