I put this in chit chat a few days ago....but it only got 3 responses, with two of them having to do with a van down by the river. Any help would be great.
A friend of mine is looking for a place to live after a recent split with a live-in boyfriend.
Does anyone know of a good place for a single person to live in the triangle area by themselves?
1-2 bedrooms, she has a dog.
She really wants somewhere that is safe and prefers to not be in the student scene (she is 26 and out of graduate school)
She works in downtown Raleigh so she doesnt want a terribly long commute.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. 4/6/2006 11:44:12 AM |

check out The Links, on Tryon Road at the RGA golf course.
When I lived there a few years ago, the apartments were super nice, quiet, and the management was awesome. It's close to S Saunders St, so it's a quick drive to downtown.
I compare this complex as a more-affordable version of 'The Lodge' in Cary, that's closer to campus. I also those the Links over Teh Lodge because I hated the management there, even in just talking to them about renting.
If she's looking for a 1BR, they have 1BR apartments with nice lofts with an upstairs that would make a nice office. 4/6/2006 11:50:36 AM |

i had some good suggestions until i saw this:
most renters I'VE SPOKEN WITH AREN'T dog friendly (even if it's a small one)...they've been cool w/ cats & a pet deposit though...

i use to live at the Links and I lived there for 4 years
dont get suckered into the Links, the apts are too expensive for what they are worth. I lived in two different buildings in 3 diff. apartments and they were built real shitty.
a one bed room loft is going to run close to 800 dollars unless they have lowered the rent.

What qualifies as "good"?
The cheapest place i've seen for a single bedroom is The Hollows, whih is off of BlueRidge (or it might be Duraleigh at that point...).
the rent is $465 for the smaller of the two floorplans.
however, the whole complex looks semi-ghetto from the outside. Havent talked to management or lived there. 4/6/2006 11:59:35 AM |

The place I'm living in may be vacant in a few months. How soon is she looking to move?
It's a one bedroom apartment that is dog friendly - it has a fenced in back yard area (kinda small). It's in Cary and is really nice and cheap. 4/6/2006 12:05:02 PM |

I never knew them to be shitty... I can't remember what building I lived in, but thought they were built pretty well. Maybe I just don't know what poor construction is
When I lived there, the 1BR apts were like 600-something which I thought was pretty reasonable. 800 is high, but still not too bad, although I would much rather live somewhere else than there for that kind of money.4/6/2006 1:04:51 PM |

Auston Grove right outside the beltline on New Bern Ave. Its about 10 to downtown but Ive never traveled it during the rush hour.
My one bedroom is about $650 after all the utilities, this was 2 years ago when they were first built though so I may have gotten some kind of deal just so they could fill the apartments. Animals are allowed, they built a lil dog park next to one of the buildings. There arnt very many students living here.

thanks guys.
and the reason I didnt search was because her situation is very specific and I didnt want to find threads and search for pertinent information (ie: has a dog, doesnt want to be around tons of college kids, etc.)
that one about "Auston Grove sounds" cool.
Keep 'em comin if you have 'em and I'll let her know. 4/6/2006 1:22:08 PM |

Sumter Square allows pets (for like a $10 a month pet fee... although they don't actually check up on people who dont pay it... a friend of mine had like 10 cats and a dog for a while without paying anything)... at its largely family oriented (with a significant minority of college students)... so its not dead, but its peaceful.
Its located between the crossroads shopping center (has some nice eats & a good theater), and plaza west which has a gym, a few places to eat, and a grocery store. Not a long drive at all to campus or downtown.

How did you get suckered into moving 3 times in the same apartment complex if you knew they were shitty?4/6/2006 2:24:28 PM |

5^ Be careful with Sumter Square. We lived there for two years and loved the first year and a half, after the first year ALL our neighbors moved out, we were the only ones on our side of the building (except the mexican family upstairs) for about 6 months, then the building filled up and our neighbors were horrible. Upstairs was a mom and dad with two kids who walked around like elephants (plaster regularly fell from the ceiling) and they smoked a lot and their dryer and bathroom vents vented into OUR apartment. Downstairs was a white trash young family who smoked and left all of their cigarettes and cigarette boxes/cases all over the porch. I'm talking a carpet of cigarettes. Hundreds of them, all surrounding their childrens plastic slide.
It can be a great place to live for the price, but you have to have the right neighbors. 4/6/2006 9:39:11 PM |

I've started to wonder if maybe they didn't like us so they specifically put those horrid people around us.
[Edited on April 6, 2006 at 9:51 PM. Reason : it IS in an awesome location, though...It was nice being right off the beltline] 4/6/2006 9:51:00 PM |
